Viva La VidaScream your heart right out. It'll throw you down and
lift you up. How beautiful and brutal is your love?
Not knowing what they needed to do to ensure Diego survived, they radioed for one of their doctors to be sent out to them, understanding just how much depended on the alliance. Fenn eventually arrived with Bas - for protection, not sure what he was doing trying to save the life of their enemy, but he did it anyway.
After doing all he could, Fenn collapsed in exhaustion, reclining back against his bag as he sat next to Diego. It was just a matter of waiting for him to wake up, hoping that it wouldn't be long.
Having sat around for nearly an hour, Wynn pushed himself to his feet, ready to take Quill and Elara back to camp, but his movement caused Diego to stir as if disturbing him from his sleep. Everyone piked up at the noise, focusing intently on the man as he continued to groan, slowly coming to his senses.
Diego's dazed eyes glanced around, only able to pay attention to the ferocious pounding in his head, until he noticed Elara who was crouching closer to him than anyone else. Instinct told him to reach out, swiping at the young girl, and pulling him into him. One of his arms wrapped around her neck, the other reached down for the gun he could feel himself lying on top of, clearly not having been noticed by the Sovereigns when they were disarming his unconscious body, and he pressed it close against her skull threatening to shoot.
"Woah, woah, calm down!" Kodiak panicked raising his own gun up beside his head, making sure Diego could see it as he carefully set it down on the ground, moving away from it.
"Guys, put everything down and step away," the Sovereign ordered, everyone following instructions except Wynn. He kept his gun aimed at Diego, willing to shoot if he could make sure that he wouldn't hit Elara.
"Wynn!" Kodiak yelled. "Put the gun down! He'll do the same once he knows we're not a threat!"
Wynn breathed heavily, refusing to take his eyes off from Diego, and not knowing what instinct to follow. All his fears were real: one wrong move and his sister would be killed...
"Wynn, it's okay," Elara forced the words out through her strangled throat, using all of her strength to get him to comply, rather than fighting for breath. "Listen."
Her skin was turning red, her lips now blue as she struggled to hold on, her hands falling from Diego's arms as she began to drift in and out of consciousness. Running out of options, Wynn surrendered his weapon, tossing it over to the pile of everyone's things.
"Diego, listen to me," Kodiak said, unsure how he was managing to keep his voice so calm. "Let her go. She didn't do this to you-"
Diego cocked the gun, the sound signalling that he was ready to pull the trigger. "What have you done with Nathaniel?" He asked. There was a foreign ache of betrayal at his name, but he had bigger problems to focus on than figuring out why he felt that way. Unable to remember that his partner was the one to attack him, the obvious conclusion was that it had to have been the people of Basilisk crowded around him.
"He tried to kill us," Kodiak answered, not wanting to give away his fate in fear that he would enforce the same onto Elara. "L-look at her," he said, his voice trembling as his gaze flickered down to Elara, her eyes rolling back into her head as her body fell limp.
"She's covered in blood. She risked her life to come out here to help us, and she saved you. We all did. Fenn, over there," he pointed towards him, "he's our doctor. We called him out here to keep you alive-"
