Episode Three, Part 4:
Viva La VidaWill you call me to tell me you're alright?
'Cause I worry about you the whole night.
Don't repeat my mistakes. I won't sleep
'till you're safe inside.Only a day after the announcement, Dreea and Kodiak were on route to meet up with Diego and the rest of his people, whilst Wynn stayed behind, pacing around the map room in search for something to do, but there was nothing. Everything was already prepared for Riders' arrival, from the tents they would be staying in, to the increased rations for the evening, and until they arrived, it seemed Wynn was unoccupied.
Unable to sit still as he waited, Wynn began to put away the documents scattered around the map room. Some of the papers were part of Sol's rescue mission, others were the schedule to rebuild Blood Riders' camp, and whatever was left was various notes on the DeadLands. He carried them over to the cabinets in the corner of the room, not having used them in a while so he suspected them to be empty. He pulled on one of the draws, trying to shove the papers inside, but something was preventing them from fitting it.
He set them down on the table behind him, reaching his hand inside to try and figure out what was lodging the draw, and pulling out what his hand grabbed onto. It was Sol's radio.
Wynn's hands nervously cradled the device, feeling his chest begin to ache at the sight of it. It had originally been on the shelf in his room, but after a week of it being there, it had proven to be too much whenever he noticed it, so he gave it to Kodiak and asked him to store it somewhere. He hadn't come across it since, and it seemed as though no one else had.
Without so much as a second thought, Wynn disregarded the papers and open draws, leaving the Quarters and heading to the only place in camp where he could still imagine her sitting at if he tried hard enough: it was the alcove, hidden down the trail beside where the vehicles were kept, right at the side fence of Basilisk.
Wynn and Sol were the only two who would go down there, and he had a peace of mind that the alcove had remained undisturbed in all the months she had been gone. Only managing to return once since she had left, the grass was now overgrown, absent of any pacing footsteps to keep the area flattened, and the small fire pit they had lit too many times was now lost, somewhere among the shrubbery.
He remembered one of the last times he was there with Sol; it was right after Fabian, MaReya and Jonas had died, and Sol had come at sat down at his side. 'We still have each other,' he had said to her, feeling some relief as she leaned her head against his shoulder, whispering back: 'we'll always have each other'. If only they had known then what he knew now...
Forcing himself to stay down there, Wynn exhaled a deep breath, sitting down on one of the two logs that were laid out. Surprisingly, the idea of radioing Aeryn's old radio - which Sol had with her when Targo captured her - had never crossed his mind. After all, it was almost a given that Rhea would have searched Sol's bag, quickly disregarding it in the DeadLands, chucking it out of the car or into a river they passed. But even with this assumption, Wynn still felt compelled to talk to her, hoping the act would offer him some comfort. Whenever they were faced with an imperative decision or transition - like the one he currently faced with the alliance - he could always turn to Sol for advice. Whatever it was, they worked it out together, and if he could feel for even a moment that Sol was listening, maybe he wouldn't be so afraid.
"Hey, Sol," his voice was shaky, almost afraid of being heard. "I hope you're okay, wherever you are. You'll never believe what we've done here... Riders are joining us tomorrow. They're staying at Basilisk as part of our alliance," he couldn't help but smile at the confession. It still felt so bizarre to say aloud, let alone imagine how Sol would have reacted to the news.
