Chapter 6: The Luminous 7

(Warning: Heavy blows, shots taken at eyes, slashes, bites)

The entire Squidbeak remained firm, though they were a little scared from what they were seeing.

"You think this might be the test?" Nana whispered.

Rider nodded. "I'm almost positive. Marie said the test would be super difficult, and these guys look tough. Also, they happen to be trying to break into the hotel we're staying in, so I don't think that could be a coincidence."

"But what do we do? Do we fight them?" Gloves asked, his voice slightly shaky.

"On the count of three, we'll summon our weapons and take them by surprise. That way, they won't see us coming so we can land a few hits on them," Rider decided.

"Why don't you just let me and Skull long range this thing and shoot the villains down? I'm pretty sure we outrange all of you," Vintage pointed out.

"Oh, uh...hadn't thought of that," Rider replied, a drop of nervous sweat trickling down his forehead.

Vintage and Skull charged up from where they were.

"If I had to guess, that purple one is the leader, since he has the most spike bands and four eyes. I'll aim for him. Skull, take out the dark blue one, since she's the largest there. Be sure to aim for her eyes," Vintage quietly commanded.

Skull nodded, and the two peeked around.

Vintage let loose a flurry of bullets as Skull lined up his charger with the orca's face. Everyone heard the orca roar in pain, and Skull realized he had indeed shot the orca in the eye. Vintage's bullet flurry hit the sea monster's eyes as well, which was perfect. They quickly ducked behind their hiding spots to recharge and aim to blind the others as well. Skull planned on sniping out the orca's other eye.

"WHO GOES THERE?!" the sea monster snarled.

"Don't give yourself away like the idiots you are," Vintage muttered to the squidbeak.

The sea monster focused, as if trying to concentrate on something. His eyes glowed, and his goons watched what he was up to.

"Come out...squidbeak splatoon..." the sea monster growled sinisterly.

The squidbeak were a little surprised that he knew who they were, so they slowly approached from hiding, despite Vintage's warning.

"Who are you... and what are you doing here?" Rider demanded coldly, holding his dynamo up as a threat.

The nautilus' expression changed. "Hey, I know these brats! That little blue and pink pipsqueak walked into me earlier!" she yelled in a shrill voice.

"Pipsqueak, huh? You have some nerve calling someone bigger-and stronger-than you a pipsqueak, you midget excuse of a nautilus," Vintage snarled back.

Amaryllis winced, but the sea monster put a large clawed...paw? hand? foot? in front of her.

"Calm yourself, Amaryllis. Who might these young ones be?" he asked, his tone shifting into an eerie calm.

The squidbeak was silent.

"We're the Squidbeak 7!" Gloves announced.

"No, I...I know that already, I read your minds for it-"

"You read our minds for that, but you didn't read our minds for our actual names?" Skull asked dubiously.

"Shhh! Don't give him any ideas!" Rider snapped.
