A few months had passed. It was the first day of UA high, and Aki was feeling a combination of fear, excitement, nervousness, and loads of unrecognizable ones. They didn't know what others would think of them if they would be more like Bakugo, and be mean to them, or if they would be more like Deku, and not really care. But they shook those feelings off. It was a bright new day, a chance to start over.
The acceptance rate that year had been low, about one in three-hundred got in. And Aki was one of them! Four people got in based on a recommendation, the other thirty-six through the regular exams. The forty kids were split into two classes of twenty people each. Class 1-A and Class 1-B. Aki was in class 1-A.
When they got there, they were one of the first ones there. A girl with black hair pulled into a ponytail, a boy half red-haired, half white-haired, and a girl with headphone jacks coming out of her earlobes. They all watched Aki come in, not saying anything, just watching as they took their seat.
It didn't take too long for the room to fill up. Aki noticed Bakugo come in, and silently cursed. Just my luck. An argument between him and the boy that they saw at the entrance exams, the guy with engines in his calves, started. Bakugo was being annoying, putting his feet on the desk, and the boy was yelling at him for it.
Bakugo insulted the man, and Aki couldn't help but giggle a little. "Let's start over," the man who was yelling at Bakugo said, "I'm 飯田天哉(Tenya Iida) from the Soumei Private Academy."
"Soumei, huh?" said Bakugo. "So you must think you're better than me. I'm going to have fun tearing you a new one." He smirked as Iida gasped.
"You would threaten me? Your own classmate? Are you sure you're in the right place?" Oh boy. This is going to go on for a while. It might've if it wasn't for Midoriya coming in. "It's him," Iida said.
Aki smiled and waved. Deku started to freak out a little, from everyone staring at him. "Oh, hi!" He said, while not looking at any of us.
"Good morning!" Iida said as he stomped over to him. "My name is 飯田天(Tenya Iida)-"
"Yeah, I uh know. Um, I'm 緑谷出久(Izuku Midoriya). It's super nice to meet you." He really looked like he didn't want to be there. They went on to talk about what he did at the exam, until a girl with a zero-gravity quirk, none other than Uraraka herself walked in.
"Hey, I recognize that messed up hair! Falling boy!"
"Oh uh hey hi! Uh, so I should probably be thanking you for going in and talking to him..." Deku blushed all over, and he looked like a lobster. Aki looked back over to Bakugo, and they saw that he looked frustrated about something, whether it was Deku, Aki, or just being surrounded by people he didn't know.
Uraraka continued to chat with Midoriya, even though he wasn't looking at her. "What do you think we're doing today besides orientation? I wonder what our teachers are like! I can't wait to meet everybody!"
"If you're just here to make friends, then you can pack up your stuff now." A strange man spoke behind the two, although Aki couldn't see him. They got up from their chair and walked over, right beside Iida.
A man wrapped up in a yellow sleeping bag layed on the ground. He had tired, baggy eyes and a frown. His face had a light stubble, his long, messy black hair spilled out of the bag. "Welcome to UA's hero course." He unzipped a part of his sleeping bag to take a sip out of some sort of pouch.
Everyone looked surprised at him, but Aki just stared, no real emotion peeking through. The strange man stood up, still in his sleeping bag. As he talked, he slowly unzipped the bag and stepped out of it. "It took you eight seconds to shut up. That's not going to work. Time is precious; rational students would understand that."
Who is this guy? And why does he look so... familiar? The man continued, introducing himself, "I'm 相澤消太(Shota Aizawa). Your teacher." Everyone in the room gasped. This time, so did Aki. This man is our...teacher? That's not right. Is it? He seems far too....tired for this job. "Right let's get to it," Aizawa-sensei continued, as he grabbed something out of his bag. It appeared to be some sort of uniform, maybe for a gym or training. It was blue with white horizontal and vertical lines on it. It also had a bit of red on its sleeves. At least it's unisex. "Put these on, and then head outside." Once again everyone gasped. This teacher was just full of surprises, Aki guessed.
Now it was time for Aki to be confused. To get changed, would they go in the male or female restroom? Maybe there's just a regular bathroom nearby. Aizawa-sensei must've seen them just standing there, instead of going in like the other students, so he tapped on their shoulder. Aki turned around surprised.
"Why aren't you getting dressed?" He said, not breaking the stern, tired look.
Aki bowed, before standing up straight to address him. "Do you have a regular restroom?"
"Why do you need that? Just go in the males. Besides, to answer your question, no, we don't."
Aki was wearing the regular male uniform today, except they added a bowtie as well, because maybe, like their other school, they could teach their class difference. Well, it all starts now, with Aizawa-sensei. "I am genderfluid, Sensei. Some days I am male, some female, and others, like today, I am neither male nor female. I wear the male uniform when male, female uniform when female, and the male uniform with a bowtie when neither, like today." Aki wasn't looking at him, so they didn't see his reaction.
"Oh. Well, I can have a request filled out for them to make a new bathroom, but today I would suggest waiting till everyone's come out then go in. We won't start without you." And just like that, he walked off. Well that was...anticlimactic. I thought he was going to...I don't know I just thought he would do something a little more sensei-ish. Again, something about Aizawa-sensei seemed so familiar.
Before long Aki got dressed and ran outside to where Aizawa-sensei brought the other students.
"I am going to hand out a quirk assessment test," Aizawa-sensei said, not facing the students when Aki arrived.
A quirk assessment test? But what about the orientation? "But orientation..." Uraraka said in place of Aki. "We're going to miss it!"
"If you really want to make the big-leagues, you can't waste time on pointless ceremonies. Here at UA, we're not tethered to traditions." He turned his head so one of his eyes gazed upon us. "That means that I get to run my class however I see fit. You've been taking standardized tests most of your lives, but you never got to use your quirks in physical exams before." He showed us this phone screen listing our previous physical exam scores. "The country is still trying to pretend we are all created equal, by not letting those with the most power excel. It's not rational. One day the ministry of education will learn.
"Bakugo-Kun," He said, now fully facing them, "you managed to get the most points on the entrance exam. What was your farthest distance throw with a soft-ball when you were in junior high?"
Bakugo glanced down. "Sixty-seven meters, I think."
"Right. Try doing it with your quirk." Bakugo walked over to the white circle marked on the ground not too far away from the class.
"Anything goes, just stay in the circle," Aizawa-sensei instructed. A moment passed with Bakugo just staring at him. "Go on. You're wasting our time."
"Alright man, you asked for it." he stretched a little bit before throwing. He must've thrown as hard as physically possible, and used his quirk to make an explosion and blow the ball away even farther.
"All of you need to know your maximum capabilities," Aizawa-sensei continued while watching the ball hit the ground. He showed us the phone screen again, this time saying '705.2 meters'. "It's the most rational way of figuring out your potential as a pro-hero."
Aki understood what Aizawa-sensei meant. Being a pro-hero was going to be hard. Passing this school was going to be hard. But it would be worth it, to prove to their mom, their brother, to Midoriya, to Uraraka, to Aizawa-sensei, and to everyone that doubted them. Despite not really wanting to, they would do it at whatever cost.
