Jughead Jones was dead. Or at least, that had been the plan.
Instead the raven-haired boy was being kept hidden in an underground bunker in the middle of Fox Forest, after being checked over by a medic provided by him and Betty's half brother Charles, it was assured he would be okay there.
Though Jughead hadn't been awake since the incident in the forest, which still left Betty confused over what had happened. Everything was fuzzy to her. Donna had mentioned a new trigger word, and then everything had gone black, before Betty found herself stood over her boyfriend's bloodied body holding a rock coated in the same red liquid.
The images still haunted Betty, who hadn't slept since the incident. His bloody face hadn't left her mind since she'd first laid her gaze on it, and each thought about him just made her want to cry.
Stonewall Prep was supposed to be a good opportunity for him. It gave Jughead a chance to broaden his skill with writing (not that he wasn't good anyways, it would just help him). Though instead he was welcomed into a secret society, which ended up in him getting kept in a coffin, tormented by his roommate, and almost lost his relationship due to the same person.
Of course Betty blamed herself. She had been the one thing holding him back from going, and she'd convinced him to go. She was the one who had sent him there, it was all her fault.
Whilst he was down in the bunker, Betty came and visited as often as she could as not to arise suspicion. Though for two days each visit was the same - Jughead was still unconscious. She'd left him a note down there in case he were to wake whilst she wasn't there, which simply read;
If you wake up, I'll be down soon, don't freak out. I'll explain everything soon enough. Please don't leave the bunker. I love you lots - Betty xxx
The blonde felt sick to her stomach each time she climbed down the ladder of the bunker and stepped through the small tunnel to get into the room, afraid she'd find Jughead dead. The medic and Charles had both assured her that he was going to be fine and wake up eventually, but she couldn't help the rest consume her.
The fifth time she'd entered the bunker after the incident, Jughead was far from dead. In fact, he was awake.
Betty had stepped through the tunnel into the room, just as the fluorescent yellow lights flickered with a low buzz. The flickering of the lights used to bother her when the couple had first started using the bunker as their escape place, but she'd learned to ignore it.
Though her attention was far from the lights, anyways, as once she'd stepped into the room her gaze locked onto her stitched up boyfriend, and she could've sworn she could've started sobbing there and then.
"Oh Jug!" She choked out as she immediately engulfed him in a huge hug, his own arms winding back around her waist tightly as his head fell to rest on top of hers.
"I was wondering if you'd forgotten about me." He muttered into her blonde strands - which had been left down instead of in her usual ponytail.
"Are you okay?" She managed to get out, leaning back from the hug enough to look up at him through a tearful gaze, lip trembling as she tried her hardest not to cry.
"I'm okay, Betty." He whispered softly, lifting a hand to gently caress her cheek, wiping away a stray tear that had fallen with the pad of his thumb.
Betty took a moment to take in his features - the ones she'd missed looking at for what felt like years. Green hues met baby blue ones, an ocean of such a rich colour that made her feel safe. Flickering her gaze up to his hair she could've wept at the realisation that his beanie had been burned, seeing his messy raven strands up in all directions on his head. Though it was the stitches on his temple that made the tears start to fall down her cheeks, images of his bloodied face flashing in her mind as she met his gaze once more.
