Betty didn't think of much when she brought home a fake plant one day. She just wanted to brighten up the living room of her and Jughead's shared apartment, so she thought the brightly coloured false flowers would do that job nicely. And considering every real plant they'd bought before had died, it was just easier to have a false one. So she'd put the fake potted plant on their coffee table, and didn't think anything of it after that.
Until she'd walked into the living room the day after and saw Jughead watering the plant.
"Jug, what're you doing?" Betty asked with her eyebrows furrowed. Surely he could tell the plant was fake, right?
"Watering the plant, you forgot earlier." Jughead shrugged nonchalantly, putting the cup he'd used to water the plant on the coffee table, before moving over to Betty and kissing her for a moment.
As Betty kissed him she debated her two options; she could tell her poorly mistaken boyfriend that the plant was fake, and let them both laugh over his silly misunderstanding. Or she could just let him believe it was real, and see how long it took him to realise. Being the amazing girlfriend that she was, Betty went with the latter option.
"Well, thank you for watering it." The blonde smiled once she'd pulled away from the kiss, the humour dancing in her eyes going unnoticed by her boyfriend.
"No problem." Jughead smiled back and left another kiss against her lips, before leaving the room to put the cup in the kitchen.
Betty pressed her lips together to hold in her laughter, just shaking her head to herself at her boyfriend's silliness as she carried on with her day.
Jughead watering the plant because a daily occurrence. Every day he'd come into the room with a cup of water, pour it into the pot, then just carry on with whatever he was doing. And every time Betty watched him with an entertained smile, knowing the secret that he didn't know. He had absolutely no clue.
"You know what I've just realised?" Jughead asked randomly one night a few months after she'd gotten the plant, the couple sat on the sofa in each other's arms as they watched one of their favourite horror movies; Halloween. "That's the one plant we've had that we haven't killed." He gestured to the plastic plant on the table with a small chuckle, and it took everything Betty had not to break into laughter and just tell him.
It baffled her how someone so smart could believe that something plastic was living. Of course, it looked realistic, but you could still tell that there was a difference if you looked close enough. But Jughead obviously hadn't looked that close, as he was convinced it was real.
"Maybe that's because you haven't done anything to kill this one yet." Betty teased with a small giggle, deciding not to tell him.
"Yeah yeah, whatever, you killed the others." Jughead playfully rolled his eyes as he moved a hand to tickle her side for a moment, causing another giggle to flow past the blonde's pink lips.
'Maybe.' She thought to herself as they both turned back to the movie. 'Or maybe it's just impossible for you to kill this one.'
The following week, Veronica and Archie had come over for lunch. With them all living in different places and having jobs, it was rare they got to catch up with their friends. So having them over was definitely a good thing.
As soon as Veronica had walked into the apartment she'd pulled Betty into a huge hug, rambling about how much she'd missed her best girlfriend as she practically squeezed the life out of her. Then she just pulled Jughead into her arms, too, ruffling his hair once she'd pulled away with a smirk, a snide comment leaving her lips about how he'd finally gotten rid of that damn beanie.
After all greetings had been passed between the two couples, they walked through the small apartment to their living room - Jughead sitting on the arm of the armchair Betty sat herself in, and Veronica and Archie occupying the loveseat together.
"Oh, I've got one of those." Veronica told the couple, pointing to the flowers on the table. "Someone wouldn't stop killing all of our real plants, so I just bought some fake ones." The raven haired girl smirked at her redheaded boyfriend, unaware of the confusion she'd just cast over the other man in the room.
"What?" Jughead asked, looking at Betty who just bit her bottom lip to keep from laughing. "You must just have a plant that looks like ours, Ronnie, because ours is real."
Betty betrayed her own promise to not tell him by letting a giggle spill out of her lips, entertainment dancing in her eyes as she looked up at her boyfriend. Jughead stared at her for a moment still wearing a confused expression, though it soon clicked, causing him to stand up and look down at his girlfriend.
"What?!" He practically yelled. "You- I- you're serious?!"
Betty just laughed harder as Veronica and Archie looked between each other, it being their turn to become confused.
"What's going on?" Archie asked, eyebrows scrunched together as he looked at Jughead.
Though the other boy didn't pay any attention to his best friend, still staring at Betty. "You stood and watched me water a fake plant for four months?!" He almost exploded.
Betty was laughing so hard that she had tears building in her eyes, and it didn't take long for Veronica and Archie to erupt into their own spouts of laughter too.
"It's not funny! You could have told me it was fake! Betty!" Jughead sounded more like he was whining, now, embarrassed that he'd been doing something so stupid for four months.
"Oh my god, Juggie!" Betty laughed, her cheeks hurting from the huge entertained smile she wore. "You should have known, they're not that realistic! I was waiting for you to find out for yourself but you- you just kept thinking it was alive-" the blonde just started laughing again, a scowl over her boyfriend's features as he looked at her.
Once her laughter had died down Betty stood up, a smirk over her pink lips as she moved her hands up to cup the face of her lips pouting boyfriend.
"You're so silly." She teased with another giggle, before leaning in to kiss him, feeling his lips turn upwards into a smile of his own as she did so.
"It's still not funny." Jughead huffed once she'd pulled away, though was smiling a little still. "You're so mean, I thought it was real."
"I'm not mean, you're just gullible." She giggled, letting her arms wrap around his waist as he moved one around her shoulders.
"Hey Jug?" The couple looked away from each other and at Archie once he'd spoken. "It says gullible on the ceiling."
Both girls started laughing again, whilst Jughead just sent a glare in Archie's direction and grabbed a cushion from on the armchair to throw it at his best friend, who was also chuckling.
