Ever since Aliya was little, she had been prone to having bad dreams, waking up in a cold feverish sweat, her bedsheets tangled around her limbs as she rapidly gasped for breath, searching for just one single glimpse of relief.
They started when Aliya was around five years old, when she still thought that parents were the people that were meant to dry your eyes in times like these. The kind of people who whispered softly that everything was going to be okay as she fell asleep in their arms, and all the wrongs in the world were insignificant once she fell into that dreamless abyss.
However, Aliya quickly realised that kind of fantasy was reserved for the children who didn't have famous surgeons as parents. More specifically, the children who didn't have Molly Levine as a mother.
So, for the third time Aliya was sent back to her bedroom in floods of tears in the middle of the night, she pulled the blankets over her head, staring at the pages of book under the glow of a flashlight until her eyes grew glassy and she fell back to sleep.
Night terrors was what her doctor had worded it to her parents when she was finally taken to see a psychiatrist in the fourth grade after four years of ignoring their daughter's hysterics.
A different doctor to the one who failed to cure Aliya's so-called overactive imagination.
It seemed that as soon as Aliya stepped out of the box Molly had expected her to stay confined in, she whisked her youngest daughter straight to the best shrink in town.
Molly Levine didn't want another daughter when she found out she was pregnant with Aliya.
No, she wanted a protégé.
She wanted someone to control, to mould into a near-replica of herself.
Molly thought it would be easy, she raised her other two children to be perfect, maybe not the perfect surgeons, but perfect all the same.
But, when Aliya grew up she made every attempt to break out the walls of her tower.
The most popular term used to describe what tormented Aliya was nightmares.
However, as William Shakespeare had once so wisely said, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet."
