Throughout her whole entire life, she never learned to really, truly appreciate the mornings.

Growing up in Malibu, she had adored getting up before anybody else was awake to race down to the deserted beach with her surfboard in hand, bikini tan lines around her shoulders and waist, shell necklaces tied around her neck, sand catching against her ankles and filling her sandals before she kicked them off to take the plunge into the water.

Back then she never realised how much she would want to savour the minutes where everything in the world was quiet.

Maybe living by the lake made her appreciate it even more now, as the morning sun sent warm and golden reflections across the water she looked out on every morning ever since.

Aliya Levine brought her fresh mug of coffee to her lips, letting the steam flush her cheeks as she took a long sip.

She didn't care when the coffee started to burn her throat— she didn't even flinch.
