"I'm going to be moving."
Jacob felt terrible having to give that announcement, as he didn't want to have to leave Kevin. He loved their friendship and everything that came with it.
"Oh. Why is that bad news?" The younger asks, curiosity and sadness consuming him.
Jacob hesitated, "Well, I'm moving at the end of this week to South Korea with my boyfriend. He received a really great job promotion, but he has to move to where the main company is located. That means I have to go with him." It was depressing, really, that he had to leave his town and country that he's only ever known. This was hard.
He also didn't want to leave the younger.
"Oh, wow," Kevin responds after awhile. "That's pretty far." It was very far, on the other side of the world. Kevin felt so much sadness fall in him at once. His soulmate was going to be even harder to get. He wouldn't lie and say he had no feelings for the older. In fact, even if he hadn't known about their soulmate status, he would still fall for Jacob because he was so wonderful and had the most beautiful soul. Everything about the older made Kevin so enamored.
It seemed another life time was going to pass without his soulmate again. It was the same routine of letting the other go.
They walked in silence after that. Neither of them knew what to say. Their thoughts consumed them enough to distract them from socializing. It would be okay, though. They had already created so many great memories together so it wasn't a total loss.
Jacob realized, though, that wasn't enough for him. He had definitely developed feelings for the younger, despite trying to push them down. This move was going to hurt a lot more than he realized.
Kevin decided it was a good idea to part ways for the night, giving the excuse of having to do laundry. Jacob agreed, stating his excuse of studying.
Before they said their goodbyes, Kevin stops the older. "I need to tell you something, as well." Was this a dumb idea? Yes. Was it against the rules of soulmates? Probably. Kevin knew this was stupid, what he was about to confess, but he needed it to be said. He was tired of being quiet about it.
Jacob waits for the younger to continue, watching him hesitate with his words as if it was the hardest thing to say. He was a bit nervous, but stayed patient for the other to speak.
"I'm going to tell you something crazy, but please, don't let this change anything and I don't want you to feel bad. Also, I don't want you to think this is me trying to keep you from moving. I just-" Kevin stops. He bites his lip hard, as his eyebrows furrow in frustration. The urge to cry was getting heavier on him.
At this point, they were stopped in the middle of a sidewalk, somewhere in a quiet neighborhood. The sun was quickly setting, the orange glow painted on the two boys' faces as they stare at each other.
"We're soulmates." There, he said it. He ripped off the band-aid. Now, he just had to wait for Jacob to laugh in his face, tell him how ridiculous it was.
Except, he didn't laugh. A look of surprise and confusion took over the older's face. He didn't know how to respond. So, he didn't.
Jacob thought that this had to be a joke. It couldn't be real. Did life really choose to mess with him that bad that his soulmate had been someone he couldn't have? It was hard for him to know if the other was serious, since he didn't get lucky as to keep his past life memories like some people did.
He remembers, as a kid, when his parents told him the story of soulmates. He remembers them telling him their story and how his mom had kept their memories of their past lives together. It would always be them, no matter what life they would be in. They were lucky.
"Yeah, so I'm going to get going now. Sorry for ruining things between us, but I think it's better if this is our final goodbye." Kevin finally breaks the silence, but after what the other says, Jacob wished that he hadn't. His words hit him like a brick to his stomach.
Before he could stop the younger, Kevin was already out of sight. Tears begin to fill Jacob's eyes, to the point where he could no longer see a couple of feet in front of him. Everything felt like it was crashing down on him.
"In another life," Jacob begins, speaking allowed to no one. "In another life, we will find each other and be together."
