GENDER NEUTRAL FLUFF

~minor blood warning~

(Art is not mine cred to ???)

----------

I rushed into work at the news of a new tank, excited at what the lab had gotten their hands on. I was the first there, meaning I got first dibs, and I clocked in as fast as possible. I practically slid into the tank room, arm out trying to balance before I tumbled to the ground, landing on my back. I heard a loud slosh of water and got even more excited. I looked up at the new tank and froze.

That's a person.

I looked a little harder and realized that they had a fish tail, what actually looked like a Siamese fighting fish, and it was a beautiful blue that was mirrored in their eyes. Their eyes that held a deep concern. Wait why are they concerned? I then looked at myself again, realizing I was still sprawled out on the ground. I scrambled up, brushing myself off as I slowly walked up to their tank.

"Hello there." I smiled at him through the tank's glass, grabbing the short chart that consisted of his weight and length, as well as where they found him. "The coast of Japan?! Why did they transfer you so far away?" I look up at him, pity in my gaze as I realize the lab never intended to release them back into the wild. They tapped the glass lightly after I looked back at the chart, trying to get my attention. I looked back at them and they pointed at the big tank.

"You want to be in there? Well the salt's not right. You've gotta wait a little longer, okay?" They seemed to sulk, lightly pressing on the glass walls of their tank. I looked at the schedule and saw it wasn't going to be ready until noon, but it was only... 7 AM! What!? I walked over to the intercom, calling the tank crew.

"Yes? What's goin' on?" the guy on the other end asked tiredly.

"Hey, is there any way you could get the big tank ready before noon? The new... um... Merperson? I guess that's what they are. They want more space and I honestly can't blame them. It's cramped and they've been in there since they were flown out of Japan."

"Wait there's a what in that tank? Um... I'll have it ready in two hours. I wanna see you release it though." He sounds like a kid going to an amusement park.

"Alright, but you know the drill. No phones or cameras."

"Got it boss!"

The phone hung up and I saw him run out with the bags of salt. The merperson pressed up against the glass to watch, clearly interested in the process. In that moment I noticed the chain around their neck, rooting him to the base of their tank. I was filled with so much unbridled rage that I dropped my clipboard. They whipped around at the sound and backed away slightly at the sight of my angered face. I realized I scared them and covered my mouth, biting back my anger.

"I'm sorry for scaring you. Is this yours?" I point at the chain and they shake their head and move it slightly to reveal raw skin, making me clench my fist making my nails dig into my palm. "Do you want it off?" They nod but widen their eyes and look at my clenched hand, and so did I, noticing the small amount of blood on my nails. They nearly launched out of the water, grabbing my hand and kissing it. "W-what?" They kissed it again and wiped it clean, rubbing it on their face.

"D-Don't... hurt... n-nice... hands." I almost fell on my back. They can speak! And their voice is deep. I wonder if it's good for underwater communication.

"You- You can talk?" They nod. "Do you have a name?"

"Jotaro." I smile, glancing to the table and almost jumping at the sight of a key.

"Well Jotaro, I might be able to get that chain off ya!" I went to go get it but they were still holding my hand. "I need my hand back for a second," I say chuckling at their clingy nature. They slowly let go of my hand, staring at me as I got the key. "Alright, can I see your collar?" They nodded and bent down so I could see, making it easy to unlock the collar and toss it to the floor. "There! No more heavy iron!" They gave a small smile and I felt my heart skip a beat.

"Thank you, pretty... science human." I blushed as they dove back under, curling into a ball.

"Uh, Earth to Dr. (L/n)?"

"Huh?" I jolted out of my thoughts as the one tank guy I knew, John, waved his hand in front of my face.

"The tank's ready. We should start transporting this guy." I look over to the tank, seeing him, I found out he was male when I was examining his tail, wave at me.

"Alright. You ready for the big tank Jotaro?" He looked at me and nodded, excited for the extra tail room. We carefully lugged his tank up to the observation deck, lowering it with the crane. I let the tank fully submerge and he shot out of it, almost like a dolphin would. I could't help but smile at the enthusiasm he had, swimming around the large pool. I ran down to the edge, waiting for him to pop back up.

"Holy shit, I didn't think you were serious when you said he was cramped but after seeing this I can tell he was squished."

"Well if you were a little over two meters long stuck in a meter and a half cage, you'd be cramped to." I chuckle a bit at the little spins and jumps he did, excited for his new space. Then my body was met with the water and I was drenched. I started treading water, realizing Jotaro pulled me in.

"You okay?!" John yelled from the edge.

"I think I'm okay!" I call back, realizing I'm a few meters from where I was. I felt arms wrap around my waist as I was slowly lifted and turned around. I was nose-to-nose with Jotaro, in the middle of the observation pool.

"My pretty science human, not theirs." I blushed, realizing he was jealous.

"Yes, I'm your science human. He has a mate at home," I assured him, placing a hand on his cheek. He nuzzled into my palm as he gave me another small smile. I swear he knows he's flustering me. "You don't have to be territorial. I'm not going anywhere."

The recognition in his eyes was incredible, but what got me was the human-ness. He responded like a person, but with less knowledge of the English language. This will be one hell of a new subject.

----------

"Hey, (Y/n)," Jotaro shouted from across the pool.

"Hmm? What's up?" His language skills have improved by leaps and bounds over the last two years, all while helping me learn about merfolk. I look over to him in his hat that I gave him after he got a horrible sunburn on his nose. It almost looked like a sailor's cap, but it's begun fraying, in the weirdest spots no less, almost looking like part of his hair.

"I'm turning 20 this moon cycle."

I stop everything and look down. He told me that when mermen turn 20 they need to find a mate or they'll die of adrenaline and testosterone overdoses. I have to get him back to Japan. Even though I want him here, I can't let my emotions get in the way of his health. "I need to-" I start.

"I want you to be my mate, (Y/n)."

I look over to him in shock only to find him inches from my face. "Are you sure you want a human mate?" My heart was screaming to say yes, but my brain said it was fake.

"As sure as I was when I said you're my science human. So," He looks down before looking back up with those ocean eyes that I fell for all that time ago, "be my mate." My last bit of resistance crumbled.

"Yes, I'll be your mate Jotaro!" I hugged him as he pulled me into the water, celebrating. He put us both on the surface, reveling in our smiles before pulling me in for a kiss.

"I love you, Jotaro."

"I love you too, (Y/n)"
