Yibo got home and placed the groceries on the kitchen table. Its been a long time since he cooked. Frankly speaking he could not remember if he can even cook well. But Xiaozhan did attest that he cooked in the past and that he liked his cooking.

He opened the cupboard and a familiar row of spices and bottles of sauces greeted him. They presented themselves in colorful arrays of choices, tempting him to pick them up. He untied the grocery bags and lay them all out on the kitchen island. He wondered what Zhange likes to eat. There were heaps of vegetables, meat, tofu, potatoes, etc.. The food filled the entire table.

He had bought too much. Way too much.

It was just a dinner.. Keep it simple and do something that he felt comfortable doing. Afterall, Zhange did not look the type who was picky about food. Nevertheless, he was excited to finally find the surge of motivation to cook for his crush.

After contemplating and painstakingly guessing what type of food was best prepared for the occasion, he picked the necessary veggies and meat, then put the others into the fridge.

The once bare fridge was now happily stuffed and bore the contents of a happy household. It was no longer the sad abandoned fridge full of unused stuffs.

The winter was cold but the western window was filed with the golden light of the setting sun. The light entered the kitchen and made his mood better.

He took a deep breath and started to mince the onions and vegetables. When he was done, he was slightly impressed by his skills. Even when his mind could not remember, his fingers did.

When the sun had set, he had finished cooking about four dishes. He laid them down on the dining table. He stared at them, once in a while rearranging the configuration to make it look most presentable.

After he was satisfied, he cleaned the kitchen. His stomach was slightly hungry but when he thought that Zhange would praise him for his hard work, his heart felt full.

After a while, the kitchen was spick and span and smelling of apple dishwashing liquid that he used to wipe the counter top. Even the floor was shiny and clean.

Yibo wiped his forehead with his shirt and glanced at the clock.

It was six pm

Zhange should be home soon. He felt sticky so he ran up to his room and took a quick shower. He wanted to be down there in the living room when Zhange arrived.

Yibo finished his shower and headed downstairs. He checked the food once more and made some tea. then he sat on the sofa and checked his phone.

No new messages from him.

Seven pm

Maybe something came up at work so he's working overtime.

He walked to the window and looked down at the sea of lights some twenty floors below. The long stretch of roads were packed with endless stream of red and yellow lights illuminating the darkness below.

Peak hour traffic.

Maybe he's stuck in traffic.

Eight pm

His stomach growled.

He walked up to the kitchen table and reheated the food one by one. Then placed it back on the kitchen table neatly and covered each one of them with a porcelain lid.

Nine PM

Still no messages.

Finally, he texted him: Zhange, are you working overtime? Its okay, take your time I'm not hungry yet. I'll keep the food warm for you.
