Chapter 47

Rain falling on the windshield. Endless drops cascading down from the sky.

Good. Let it rain.

December had arrived, soon it would be christmas, then the new years, the year would conclude itself.

Like pain, time never cared about how you feel. Like a river, it flows unceasingly. The rocks will always be there, the valleys would come and bend the river yet it flowed ceaselessly, just like life itself. You don't stop. He would reach a valley and another. It would flow regardless of how you felt, just like the endless raindrops from the sky. The pain in his heart would not be permanent. He had grown up. Yet yesterday's wound came crawling back to him, fresh and full of pain.

Why did people fall in love?

Like alcohol, we drunk love to our hearts content, believing in its warmth and that it was the only thing that could heal our brokenness.

Delusions...

He was fine with his wanton ways of the past, his occasional flings, occasional one night stands.. and his consistent policy of never taking a boyfriend. Xuan had taught him that through his betrayal. He thought Yibo was different.

Gahh! He smiled sarcastically at his stupidity. He should not take love seriously. Those type of things were meant for someone else. Not for him.

Although there were gaps in that type of life, but he was doing fine. He could focus. He could be himself. His life was monotoned and less colorful. He did not experience surging feelings of extreme happiness from love yet there was also no pain. but he did alright. At least that way of living promised stability. He never needed to be despaired, depressed, or be broken into pieces.

Why did people fall in love, knowing they would be hurt?
Why did people play with fire, knowing they would be burnt?
Humans were slaves to their feelings. Those lovely couples holding hands on the streets, sharing an umbrella giggling through the rain.... Those type of things were never meant for someone like him.

He turned on the radio. Soft music played complementing the rhythm of the pouring rain. The sudden familiarity struck him. It was his song. The one WangYibo sang in front of him when they met for the first time. The one that got him to notice him in the first place. The one Xiaozhan had asked him to sing it to him again when they were on a date and he taught him to skateboard.

He wanted to turn off the radio. Yet his hands trembled. A small part of him persisted like that stubborn flicker of candle light in the midst of a cold winter's day. This was a part of Yibo that he liked, a part of his memories, their memories. This song reminded of their love, their togetherness. It was so beautiful yet so heartbreaking. He let himself drown in it one last time.

The song ended. The whispers of the rain grew louder.

The voices in his heart were getting impatient.

He had to meet him and settle things.

Heavens knew how long he sat on the car parked neatly amongst the row of others in his apartment garage. Countless people had parked and he had watched them leave the car and head for the elevator.

He was scared of moving forward.

After another agonizing eternity had passed, he finally walked calmly out of his car and headed toward the familiar elevator. This had been his home for many years. Yet it was the first time his fingers were shaking as he reluctantly pressed the button to the twentieth floor.
