**********************************************On Monday, I wear one of Emilie's old skirts with a tight cropped top that I would have never worn before my realization. Becca wears a short, flirty dress, and when we see each other at lunch, we share a mutual look of adoration. Adoration for our power, for our femininity, for our lack of restraint. Allison and Alisha give us questioning looks at the lunch table. Nick and Andre sit down with us, and when we catch Andre staring, we look to each other again, smiling. Proud.
"What the hell is up with you two?" Allison asks bluntly.
I shrug and Becca says, "Nothing. We just thought we would dress up."
"I think you guys look great," Alisha says. "You look like you belong in some teenage drama TV show or something. Dress up tomorrow so I can join in. Like everyone is looking at you two."
"I mean, you guys look great, I just don't get where it's coming from," Allison says. "Is it for Sean or something?"
"No, it's just for me," I say and sip my water.
"You hate dressing up. You couldn't even be bothered to brush your hair."
"Well, I could be bothered to today."
Allison shakes her head. "You guys are weirding me out."
Nick nudges her and she waves him off. Soon Javier joins us and Jalen as well. I turn to Jalen and ask, "Hey, do you know where Sean is?"
"Uh, I'm pretty sure he's at the tables outside with some guys from the team."
Becca leans into my ear and asks, "Going hunting?"
"Yeah. I'll catch you guys later."
With my backpack hanging from one shoulder, I make my way through the cafeteria, through the tables of students, and through the outside doors. There's an array of stone picnic tables, and I stop to look for him among the many teenagers. When I spot him, I set my target and cast off in his direction. He's at a table with a bunch of jocks as Jalen said, and when I arrive, hands flat against the tabletop, they all look to me. Sean eyes me up and down, then settles on my sweet face.
"Hey, Dani," one of them-I think his name is Spencer-greets me.
"Hey, sorry to interrupt," I say, "I was just hoping I could steal Sean for a moment."
Sean's eyes never leave me, and when I slowly look to him, something deep inside of me builds. He stands up, walks over to me, places his hand on the small of my back, and leads me away. As we head through the cafeteria, he asks, "Who's skirt is that? Because I know it isn't yours."
"Do you like it? I borrowed it from Emilie. Becca and I thought we would dress cute today."
He mutters, "You don't look cute, Dani. Every guy in here can't keep their eyes off your ass."
My hands instinctively cover my behind, holding down what little fabric covers it. I take a quick scan of the room, realizing that Sean is right. Plenty of eyes are glued to my butt, waiting for the chance that they might sneak a peek of something more.
"Jesus," I breathe. "I thought they were looking at everything not just my, you know."
When we pass my table, Becca smiles then sticks her tongue out at me. I send her one back.
Sean takes me into the hall, but I already know where we're going. He's taking me to the classroom-our spot. "Come on," he says, walking faster.
When we reach the door, he gets me inside and closes it. I face him with a pretty smile; my hands clasped behind my back. Again he looks me over, shaking his head and muttering to himself. One by one, he steps toward me, and my heart begins to beat faster and faster.
