The immensely strong Bhimasena was radiant at the mouth. Shikhandi and Dhrishtadyumna were the eyes. The brave Satyaki was the head. Wielding the Gandiva bow, Partha was stationed at the neck. With an entire akshouhini, the illustrious and great-souled Drupada, together with his sons, stationed himself for battle on the body. Draupadi's sons and Subhadra's valiant son formed the back. Yudhishthira, Nakula, and Sahadeva formed the rear.
Bhishma advanced and started bringing down the warriors of Dharma's son. Seeing this, Kiriti (Arjuna) proceeded towards and shot him with numerous arrows.

Seeing Bhishma and Arjuna engaged, Drona proceeded to vanquish Pandavas. Satyaki at once came in his way and stopped him. Drona filled with rage, attacked Satyaki. He struck Satyaki's shoulder with 10 arrows. Bhima seeing this rushed to help him. Bhishma, Drona, and Shalya surrounded and attacked Bhima.
Abhimanyu and Draupadi's sons became wrathful and rushed towards Bhima and shot thousands of arrows at the warriors. Shikhandi, the powerful warrior approached the mighty grandsire.
Seeing him, remembering that he was a woman once, did not lift his bow. Shikhandi immediately shot many arrows at him.
