Chapter 3
"Psst... Psst, Leah"
Leah lifted her head to her friend sitting across her, "What?" she grumbled while eating her paid lunch.
"Give me some of your fries"
Leah looked at her packed lunchbox, envying at the delicious looking food she ate with her chopstick. "Only if you give me one sushi" she replied.
"How many fries do I get in return? Four, five? It has to be at least three" Becca whispered back. Leah mulled it over for a while before nodding her head, "I'll give you three for one sushi"
Her friend smirked, "I'll take six"
They ended their trading business and Leah leaned back against the chair. "Why are we even whispering?" she asked confusedly as she took a bite of the sushi, munching on it slowly to savour them.
"It always feels more exciting when we whisper"
Leah rolled her eyes, she was about to retort back when a girl walked over to their table. A black scarf around her head, covering her hair and she wore pants underneath her skirt.
"Hey Leah, hi Becca"
"What's up Zara" Becca replied cheerfully. Leah eyed the flyers in her hand. "What's that you got there?" she asked curiously. Zara took a seat beside Becca across her and pushed the flyers to the middle of the table.
"Just handing out flyers for the arts club. You guys interested?"
Becca shake her head furiously, "Oh you do not want me to be a part of the arts club. I can't even draw a circle" Our friend Zara chuckled at her comment, she turned to me and lifted her eyebrows.
"What about you, Leah? Wasn't that 1st place science week solar planet drawing on the board yours? I think it looked amazing. Want to give this a try?" She asked excitedly, pushing a flyer to her.
"I don't know..." Leah trailed off, holding the flyer.
"Well give it a thought, ok? We desperately need a new and talented member like you" her friend complimented as she stood up. "There's proper lessons and drawing technique classes on Tuesday evening, and sometimes Mrs Daisy even take us to trips. It's fun"
"You know what? Maybe now I might just join" Becca chirped in jokingly. Zara laughed and shake her head slightly, she waved at them before walking to her friends.
"So you want to join?" Becca asked once they finished eating.
Leah offered her a small smile, "You know my mom won't let me" Her friend scoffed loudly in retort, packing her lunch box. "Who said she needs to know? You're already eighteen, you don't need her controlling every single thing you do. I say you go for it"
She smiled at her, "Ok you little rebel, I'll think about it" she said as they walked out of the cafeteria and part ways for next class.
The last bell rang loudly and everyone begin to pack.
"Class is dismissed" Miss Friday said, wiping the whiteboard.
Leah organized her messy bag, taking out papers she didn't want to bring home, she didn't remember having so much stuff in her bag. As she was doing so, a figure stood In front of her table.
"Umm, Leah... You dropped this" she lifted her head up to see a girl with straight platinum blonde hair, a round face and round blue eyes looking at her from behind the big white rimmed glasses.
Leah look down to Lindsay's hand and took the eraser that she had accidentally dropped while organizing her bag. "Thanks..." she said before throwing her pencil case inside her bag and zipping it.
Lindsay stood rooted on the spot,
"Is there something wrong?" Leah asked questioningly, Lindsay suddenly look down on her feet, her fingers fidgeting with each other in a nervous manner. "I heard you like cats... My cat just gave birth to six Persian kittens" she mumbled shyly, a red tint visible on her chubby cheeks. She looked like a hamster, Leah thought silently.
"That's cool" Leah replied back, "I once had a Persian cat before. He sheds a lot" she remarked with a chuckle.
Lindsay nodded her head in agreement, a small smile on her face as she glance at her, "If you... umm, want to see them, you can always come over to my house after school..."
Leah offered an apologetic smile and swung her bag over her shoulder, "I am a little busy tonight," she lied,
The blonde girl nodded her head, seemingly disappointed.
Leah swallowed a lump in her throat, feeling bad. "Maybe next time" she quickly offered to which earned her a smile from the girl.
"Then... Get homes safe" Leah waved in goodbye before walking out of the classroom. She sighed heavily as she walked out of her classroom, feeling bad. Lindsay never did anything wrong.
She was the problem.
Lindsay transferred to Gloria School for Girls when she was 16 and ever since then, she had been ranked as the 1st in academics. She aced every single exams and assignments with flying colours, there was no doubt she was going to be the one receiving the valedictorian by the end of the new semester as they graduate.
Her mother was furious at her, probably because before Lindsay came, Leah had been the one receiving awards and 1st place. Now she was stuck with 2nd place throughout the whole school. It was a petty thing to avoid someone just because of mere grades but the constant comparisons and unsatisfying remarks from her mother was taking a toll on her behaviour and she didn't want to one-day snap at Lindsay who never done anything to offend her.
Except being too smart...
Leah sighed and walked out of the school, checking her text to see Becca had already gone home early. Becca caught a cold quite often, her immune system is really weak so it would last longer than the average and her asthmatics didn't help her condition.
It was hard to believe someone as reckless as her friend to have such a fragile body.
Leah took out her earphones and plug it in her ears, clicking on her 'walking back home from hell' playlist to begin. She waved at a few of her classmates who waved back before exiting the gates.
The music streaming from her phone had always soothed her. She used to only wore her earphones when she passed the direction towards the co-male school because there would be many boys but now It had become a habit of her to listen to music whenever.
Leah amble on the sidewalk, her hands shooting upwards to touch the still green leaves from the trees planted beside it. Cars drove by and the shops were a few minutes before closing hours.
She crossed the road and passed a corner, heading towards her home. Once again, she recalled the events that happened yesterday and a sigh escaped her as nothing unusual happened today.
As she arrived home, she noticed the empty driveway and opened the house to see no sign of her mother. Leah walked up to her room and sat on the edge of her bed. Her hands holding the crumbled paper of the flyer she received earlier on lunchtime.
Her back fell until it met the bed and she glanced at her paintings on her white study table.
"Art club, huh..."
