“Dani which shirt should I wear for my boot camp performance?” Julian asked her as he tried to decide. Dani looked up from helping him pack his clothes to find him holding two of his favourite, slightly tattered, t-shirts.

“Neither. Wear this one with your red jeans,” she said as she lifted a black three quarter, white- sleeved shirt.

“Oh yeah, good idea! Seriously, I don’t know what I would do without you,” Julian grabbed the shirt off Dani and folded it into his bag.

“I think you’d look like the biggest loser on that stage if I didn’t dress you half the time,” she joked with him.

“I’m really not that bad, you know?” He grabbed his red jeans off the edge of his bed and folded them too.

“Julian.... Why are you packing this with you to Sydney?” Dani asked him as she lifted up the scrapbook she made him on his 12th birthday. It was filled with photos of the both of them over the years that they had been best friends, with a message on the inside that read ‘Julzzzzzzzz! Can’t believe ur 12 omg ur so old. Thankz 4 being the bestest best friend in this whole world. I can’t believe that we’ve been besties since we were born. I luv you so much. I made this for you cuz I don’t want you 2 eva forget these memories that we have. Happy Birthday! Xoxoxox luv Dani <3 <3’

Julian looked over at her and chuckled, “that is my favourite thing in this whole world. Why wouldn’t I take it with me?”

“Maybe because you’re going to BOOTCAMP in SYDNEY... Not boarding school in Africa.” Even though she found it ridiculously stupid that Julian would take that with him to Sydney, Dani couldn’t help but think of how much cuter this made him.

“I don’t care if I’m going to sleep at my nonna’s house for the weekend, I’ll take it with me everywhere. You’d be surprised at how many times I look at that you know...” Julian was looking down, trying to shove the rest of his clothes into his bag while Dani flicked through the pages of the scrapbook.

“Why though? It’s so old.” She was interested in what he would say. Normally he would say something smart to make fun of her, but not this time.

“Honestly, it’s because you made it for me. You put so much thought into it and I love it. I look through it and think of how much we’ve changed, but also how much we’re still the same. I think of all the old and new memories we have, and sometimes I think of adding to it...” Julian was now looking straight at Dani as his thoughts trailed off, his blue eyes piercing her brown ones.

“Why don’t you ever add to it?” Dani was shocked. She never thought that it could have such an impact on him.

Julian took his time to answer her question. He was really thinking about it now. “That’s how you made it for me. I could never change it. All that time and effort you put into it makes me want to keep it exactly the way it is. It’s perfect,” and he cracked a half smile, almost to himself. Dani smiled back at him, but she felt the tears in her eyes begin to form, forcing her to look away. A silly scrapbook was all she thought it was to him all these years, but it turned out to be one of the things he cherished the most. Of all the things he could have packed in that bag- a simple photo frame with their photo or photo of him with his family, one of those stupid matching key rings they had, the mini stuffed SpongeBob toy she bought him- Julian chose that scrapbook. And he was taking it to boot camp. He wasn’t even going away for very long.

“You okay Dani?” Julian broke her train of thought.

“Uh... Yeah, I just- I just have the sniffles.” She hated that he didn't know how he made her feel in terms of being in love, and how an action so simple could mean the world to her.

Julian knew why she was sniffling, and it wasn’t because of a runny nose. He understood why a scrapbook that had so much meaning to him would make her cry. They were each others’ only friend for most of their childhood and so their parents never kept them apart for more than a few days at a time. Julian always knew when something was wrong and was always there to comfort her.

He walked over to the other side of his bed, where Dani was standing, and pulled her into a hug. Nothing was said. They stood there for exactly 6 minutes and 43 seconds as she silently sobbed into his shoulder while he held her tight.

“Um, we should finish packing your bags before dinner is ready.” Dani quietly suggested, breaking the silence while still in Julian’s grasp.

“Yeah, we probably should.” he replied, but didn’t let go.

Sorry if this is a little shit, but I just finished writing it and its 3:30am. Hope you like it and thanks for reading! :) xx
