“Dani, I didn't make it,” Julian sadly broke the news to her over the phone
“What do you mean? How could you not make it? You’re amazing!” Dani was shocked. She honestly thought that her best friend would make it to the live shows, but he was cut off at boot camp.
“I don’t know, I guess I'm just not what they're looking for,” he was almost in tears.
“Don’t be ridiculous Jules! There’s always next year,” She couldn’t let him give up on his dream. It meant too much to him.
“Yeah, I guess so. But on the plus side, I can come home now and stay there for at least another year!” He tried to find the positives. Julian was shattered that he didn't make it into the top 24, but he was slightly relieved that he got to go back home and spend more time with the girl that meant everything to him.
Dani giggled at his attempt to lighten up the situation, “Yaaaay exactly! More hang out time for us!”
“Excuse me,” Julian turned around to see a man talking to everyone who got eliminated.
“Hey Dani, I gotta go. I’ll call you later,” Julian said before hanging up the phone.
The man continued, “Can the following people please come over and stand to my right: Julian De Vizio, Jayden Sierra, Trent Bell, William Singe, and Zachariah Russell.”
All five boys walked over to the man with the clipboard and followed him back onto the stage. Julian had spoken to these boys a few times in the past couple of days so he was familiar with them.
“What do you think they want us for?” Jayden asked Julian.
“Maybe they want to form a boy band,” Julian joked, making the rest of the boys laugh.
As they walked on, they saw the four judges sitting on chairs in front of them.
“Hey everybody,” Ronan began, “the reason that we want you to come back is that we as judges feel that there’s way too much talent on the show this year.”
Everyone listened nervously, as they hoped that Julian may be right.
“We see a chemistry between you guys that is really exciting,” he continued, “so we can’t let you go home just yet.”
They boys all let out a sigh. They knew that they were given a second chance.
“We’ve decided to put together a boy band,” Ronan finished. All five boys screamed and jumped. They walked off the stage together and, after celebrating and going up to his room with the rest of the boys, Julian called Dani.
“Dani guess what?!” he was too excited.
“Ahh what? What?” she could hear the excitement in his voice.
“I MADE IT TO HOME VISITS!!” He shouted.
“WHAT? YES!! ARE YOU SERIOUS? OH MY GOD I’M SO HAPPY! I KNEW YOU WOULD! WAIT, what happened? I thought you were cut?”
“Yeah I was originally but they put me in a boy band! I’m in a fucking boy band!” He laughed. He couldn’t believe it. When he auditioned, he never actually thought that his path would lead to this.
“Oh my god,” she laughed, “that’s so great! I’m so happy for you! But now you have to learn how to dance...” she joked with him.
“Ha ha ha very funny! I can dance a little bit.”
“Oh yeah, I'm sure you can....”
“Whatever,” Julian laughed, “I dance better than you.”
Dani let out a laugh but agreed with him. She was a horrible dancer and everyone knew it.
“Jules, I am so proud of you. Honestly, you make me so proud and happy. When do you get to come home?”
“Well, now that I’ve made it, I’m going straight to home visits from here and then, if we make it, we’ll have to go to everyone’s house in the band when we can go back home.” Julian explained as he realised that he wouldn’t be able to see her for a while.
“Oh, well that’s exciting and all but it really sucks. I miss you already,” she said before adding a little laugh.
“I know I miss you too. I bet I don’t look so stupid with that scrapbook now, do I?” he teased.
Dani let out another laugh, “You really don’t. I kind of wish I had my own little scrapbook too now.”
“Well you still have that CD I made you in year 8, don’t you?” Julian suggested. He had made her a CD with all of her favourite songs on it, sung by him, when they were younger and told her to listen to it whenever she was sad.
“Of course I still have that. I listen to it all the time when I'm sad, just like you told me to,” she confessed to him.
“Good. I'm glad it can still make you happy almost three years later,” he smiled. Julian loved the fact that Dani never threw out the CD. Sometimes he would walk into her room and hear it playing in the background. Just like that scrapbook was to him, he was sure that the CD he made for Dani had the same meaning.
“It’s my favourite CD. I’ll cherish it forever,” she smiled. Julian could hear the smile in her voice which simultaneously made him happier than he already was.
“JULIAN! Who are you talking to?” Will yelled from across the room, “is she your girlfriend?” he asked as he got closer to Julian.
Julian laughed, “no its not, she’s my best friend. Her name’s Dani.”
“Oh, woops... HI DANI!” Will screamed into the phone.
“Hellooooooooo mystery boy band member!” Dani yelled back. “Jules, I’ll let you go and celebrate with your boys now, I’ll speak to you soon.”
“Okay, good night Dani!” Julian replied.
“Night Jules! And congrats again! You deserve it,” she smiled.
“Thank you, you’re the greatest and I love you!” He confessed once again. He wished that she knew what he meant by that simple ‘I love you’ but he knew, or at least he thought he knew, that Dani would only take that in the friendliest of ways.
“I love you too Jules.” Dani confessed back to him before they both hung up. He couldn’t help but wish that she really did love him as someone more than a friend. What he didn't know was that she did, and every day that he wasn’t back in Adelaide, Dani felt her love for him grow stronger as she missed him more, just as his love did for her.
