“Oh my God, it’s Jules!” Dani yelled, her face lighting up. Even though she was still upset, she couldn’t help but feel excited that she could finally see her best friend.
“Hey!” was all Julian said as he walked up to the crowd at the door. Even though he had a plan, Julian missed his best friend. He couldn’t go without hugging her, however it was barely a squeeze. Dani’s excitement suddenly dropped as she realised that her best friend wasn’t the guy standing in front of her. As he let her go, he noticed that Dani’s eyes were puffy and slightly red. He whispered in her ear, knowing that if he said it out loud then she wouldn’t answer.
“Why have you been crying?”
“It doesn’t matter. And it’s not like you’d care these days anyway,” she whispered back, trying to hold back the tears that were beginning to form in her eyes again. She wasn’t going to tell him that the reason she was crying was because she felt like he wasn’t the same person anymore, or that she was convinced that he wasn’t in love with her. She needed to think of an excuse because she knew that he wouldn’t let it go, but she had some time before he asked her again. “So aren’t you going to introduce me to your new friends?” she said loud enough for everyone to hear.
“Oh yeah, these are the boys. That’s Jayden, Zach, Trent and Will” he explained as he pointed to each one.
“Boys, this is Dani,” he looked back at her.
“Ohhhhhh so THIS is Dani! Well it’s nice to finally meet you,” Jayden said as he gave her a wink.
“Julian’s always telling us how amazing you are so you better not let us down,” Trent continued.
Dani laughed, while Julian shot them both a ‘What the fuck are you doing? Can you please stop it?’ stare.
“Oh shit, I have a reputation already. I have to try and live up to it now I guess,” she joked around. Even though Dani was still upset, she never let that get in the way of how she approached others, and she never let it show either.
“I think it’s time to go inside and chuck our bags in the rooms,” Julian tried to swerve off the subject. He knew it was going to be hard to try and avoid Dani now that he was back in Adelaide. He could see that she was upset and he had a feeling that it was because her only true friend ‘had no time for her’ anymore. Julian had convinced himself that it was the easiest way to try and get over her, but once he saw the pain she was in, the guilt he felt had escalated.
Dani walked into the house and went straight to the kitchen to greet Julian’s mum. Julian followed her and introduced the boys to the rest of his family, before going upstairs and showing the boys the two rooms that they had to share. Julian and Jayden shared Julian’s room, while Zach, Trent and Will all shared the spare room. As Julian and Jayden placed their bags on their beds, Jayden started to talk to him about Dani.
“Mate, I’m no cupid or anything, but you’ve got to stop pretending like you aren’t in love with her. I saw how much it killed you to just barely give her a hug after all these weeks and, even though you pretty much pretended that she didn’t exist for two weeks and treated her like shit, she still greeted you like a best friend would.”
“You just don’t get it Jayden. She doesn’t love me like I love her. She’s always been like that. No matter how much I piss her off, she still treats me like I’m her best friend. And that’s all I am to her. I’m not the one she’s in love with mate.” Julian explained.
“I reckon you’ve got it all wrong man. Just don’t stuff up your friendship with her over it. You may have us to help you through it but, from what you’ve told us, it sounds like she doesn’t really have anyone to talk to about it.” Jayden continued. He could tell that Dani was in love with Julian, but he wasn’t sure how he would convince his mate to see it too.
“JULES! I HAVE TO GO!” Dani yelled from downstairs. “I might see you tomorrow! Bye!”
“OKAY BYE!” Julian yelled back. As much as he hoped that Jayden was right, Julian was convinced that Dani wasn’t in love with him, and now that he saw her again, all of the feelings he had tried to overcome were stronger than before. He couldn’t see her tomorrow, or any other day for at least a week. That would only make his situation even harder to deal with.

“I barely got a fucking hug!” Dani yelled into her pillow as she cried. After all these weeks of being apart, she couldn’t believe that her best friend would greet her with such carelessness and arrogance. This wasn’t the Julian that she knew and, after talking to the rest of the boys that night, she knew it wasn’t their influence either. They all seemed like great, down to earth guys, just like Julian was before. She couldn’t understand why the person that she was in love with had disappeared and, instead of her best friend, stood someone that she barely recognised.
