CHAPTER 5
Both Dani and Julian sat in the back seat. She looked over at him and saw that he was intensely thinking about something. ‘You okay?’ she texted him and looked at him, waiting for a reply. When he received the text, Julian looked at her and smiled. ‘Yeah, just thinking...’ he texted back. Dani saw the text and smiled at him.
“You kids alright back there? You seem awfully quiet.” Julian’s mum pointed out.
“Yeah, we’re just thinking, taking in the fact that Julian is leaving to Sydney in a couple of hours. You know?” Dani replied. She knew Julian’s mum for a very long time. In fact, it was because of the friendship between both mothers that Julian and Dani were practically forced into being best friends from birth.
“Huh. Well it just seems very... odd that you’re sitting there in silence,” his mum continued, “I’m so used to the both of you talking until your mouths are sore. I almost feel like something has happened. Has anything happened between the two of you?”
Dani felt very confronted. She didn't know how to answer that. She looked at Julian, as she always does in times of panic. He looked back at her and answered his mum, “Nope, nothing’s happened. We’re still the same old Julian and Dani, best friends forever and ever,” he said, almost mockingly, before letting out a cute laugh and a half smile. Dani looked back at him and forced her smile. Normally, her best friend always knew the RIGHT thing to say, but this seemed almost like a joke. She began to wonder if she did anything to piss him off but she couldn’t think of anything. Last night was a good night.
Suddenly they arrived at the airport and got out of the car, before checking in at the departures terminal.
Dani pulled Julian aside to ask him why he was so different in the car. “Jules, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” he said, without any other explanation.
“Do I look like an idiot to you? I know something is up and I'm not going to let you leave Adelaide before you tell me what’s wrong,” she demanded, before adding, “was it me? What did I do?”
Julian suddenly realised that his actions weren’t so subtle and understood that it would affect his best friend if he stayed like this. Of course Dani didn't do anything wrong to upset him. She could never upset him. He was pissed off because he couldn’t find the courage to tell her that he was in love with her. At the same time, he expected that Dani would understand the subtle hints he tried to give her, but knew that letting out his anger with sarcasm would only hurt her and push her away.
“Dani, you didn't do anything. You could never piss me off. I’m just tired and angry at myself because I’ll probably never have the balls to tell you that-“
Julian was cut off by the announcement, “Flight 718 Adelaide to Sydney now boarding.”
“Fucking hell,” he was so close to telling her but was interrupted once again. “Ugh, don’t worry about it.”
“Jules, whatever it is, you don’t have to be scared to tell me. I'm your best friend. I think I can handle it,” she smiled, “but right now, you have this to focus on and that’s what’s most important, so don’t let whatever it is eat you up.”
“Yeah, I guess so.” Julian didn't believe that anything was more important than what he had to say, but knew that this probably just wasn’t the right time for them.
“Okay... well then this is it! You’re off to Sydney now!” Dani smiled.
Julian suddenly felt scared, “Dani, come with me please.”
“I can’t come with you Jules. You’ll be fine, I promise,” she re-assured him, “now go before you miss your flight.”
“Okay.... well.... bye,” he said as he gave her and his mother a hug, “I love you!”
“Love you too Jules!” Dani yelled behind him as he walked into the terminal, looking back at her before he turned around and walked through. She hoped he would be okay. Julian had a lot of time to think while he was on that flight and, judging by the way he was feeling, Dani knew that he needed someone to talk to. She regretted not telling him to just tell her straight out, there and then, because now she was eager to find out. She couldn’t wait till he landed back home in Adelaide because she wasn’t going to make him tell her over the phone. Whatever it was, it sounded too important, and with too much emotion involved to be said over the phone.
