The parking lot of college is almost full. And we're not even late! My mother dropps me out in the front door of the college's hall while she's trying to find a nice spot to park.
So basicaly I'm left alone with my killer shoes. Great.
Struggling a little, I make my way inside. It's now 10:45 , fifteen more minutes and graduation will start.
There's more and more people arriving at the moment and the noise is rising quickly. I spot Sophia talking to her cousin Niall and she gives me a sign to join them.
"Mia! Uau! You look ... amazing." Niall greets me with his blue eyes staring, giving me a full look.
Don't blush.
"Thank you. Your cousin here is the author of all of this." I'm the worst at getting compliments.
"Sorry but I think she's nothing to do with it. It's you. It's natural." Okay, now I'm definitly blushing.
"Niall stop flirting with Mia! She has a boyfriend." Sophia says as I watch Niall's cheeks turn to red.
"I was just being truthful but okay..." Niall adds.
Niall works in New York, but he's from Ireland. He works in Styles Publishing, my future work place, as I hope. It was him that convinced Sophia to try it in New York. In turn Sophia convinced me. He just came to our graduation and he'll be leaving with us. So now, in less than a week, we'll all be flying to New York. Across the country, my subconcious adds.
"Is Sean coming?" Sophia asks breaking my thoughts.
"I don't think so, I think he's working." Maybe it's better like this.
"I need to get to my seat. There's lots of people arriving and I don't want to be standing." Niall points out.
"Okay and we'll go to the front row. At least clap your hands when your cousin is on the stage." Sophia says in a playful tone.
"I'll try not to forget. See you later." He smiles and leaves us.
"Let's go. It's time." Sophia takes my hand and we take our seats.
Names are called and people stand up to receive their diploma. I can't believe I'm almost there.
"Sophia Smith".
Sophia stands up and gives me a kiss and an eye wink.
I spot Niall claping his hands and whistling. Sophia looks awesome, no trace of nerves or anything while she holds up the diploma. I wish I was like her or maybe just had half of her confidence and self-esteem.
"Melissa Adams".
Okay, don't be nervous. Don't be nervous.
I climb to the stage and the director gives me congratulations and my diploma. It feels so good to finally receive it. My mother always said that I was going to be the first to finishing college in our family. And I know she's even more proud of myself than I am. She always battled so much by herself to give me everything. She always made her best to be both mother and father.
I never knew my father. My mother said he died when I had only months. But honestly I never felt the need of a father because my mother was everything I always needed. I owe her everything. Sometimes she drives me insane but I love her.
And I know that she's very worried about New York. I know that I can and should stay with her and try to start a career here but I want to make her more proud and to make my own money to stop depending on her. And New York is the biggest opportunity I'll ever have.
When I join Sophia on stage, it's when she says "He's here".
I look at the audience and I spot my mother, raised, clapping and crying. And next to her is Sean. My boyfriend.
I just don't know for how long.
