I wake up to the sound of my phone's alarm. Just one more minute, I think to myself knowing that if I don't get out of bed right now, my mother will storm in and physically pull me out. So I slowly get out and head to the bathroom.
"Don't you think you're a bit late, Melissa?" My mom shouts from the kitchen when I close my bedroom's door.
"Good morning for you too." I shout back, the smell of pancakes getting through my nostrils. My mum clearly isn't a morning person. I ignore her comments and enter the bathroom.
As always, she's exaggerating. It's 7.00 am and graduation starts at 11 am. I have plenty of time to prepare myself.
I still can't believe that this is it. My graduation is happening in less than four hours! I've been waiting for this moment since I can remember and now it's here! So many things will change in the next few days. So many things will be left behind. Jesus. This is driving me insane. I need to calm myself down. Suddenly, my phone vibrates in the pocket of my pajamas. It's Sophia.
"For you to be calling me right now is because your mother certainly throw you out of bed already."
"Yeah, she's driving me insane!" Sophia says in a sleepy tone. "You know her, she always needs to be the first in everything, specially getting earlier than everybody else."
"Just like mine. And from what I could smell, my mother already made breakfast. I mean, it's fucking 7.00 am! I have plenty of time to get ready!" I huff, feeling the nerves inside.
"Okay Mia, what's going on? You're not just pissed about this, there's more." Sophia asks me and I realize that I'm only making excuses. She knows me better than anyone else and. When I start saying bad words, it's when I'm either really pissed or really nervous.
"These last few days have been really exhausting, I guess. I'm just nervous about what's coming and I've been having nightmares almost every night. I'm just afraid of things going wrong. I've never left the country and this is all so surreal..." I vent, looking at my sleepy face in the mirror.
"Mia, I'm nervous too. God, I never thought of going to live in New York! But I'm also super excited! This is a great opportunity to start a career. You always said that you didn't want to be stuck in here like your mother. This is your chance. You already convinced her, so now you just need to focus on yourself. Besides, if something goes wrong, we have each other. We'll always have each other."
I love Sophia. She's like the sister I never had. We're best friends since I can remember and we never had a fight on anything. We were always from the same class from primary school to high school and we ended up choosing the same course on college. She's always the positive one and I'm the negative one. She always seems to have the perfect word for any situation. And right now, I feel much better and calmer. She always gives me strength.
"You're right, as always. Thank you."
"That's what friends are for." She says and I can feel that she's smiling.
"Well, you should see my face right now." I look terrible. Last night I couldn't sleep and it's clearly visible on my face. I'm extremely pale and I have very dark circles under my eyes. My hair it's the biggest disaster in the history of hair disasters. I need help. "Can you come by and help me a little?"
"Sure, let me just do my makeup first. Just give me an hour." Sophia lives down the street and we're always doing this type of favours to each other.
"Okay, meanwhile I'll have breakfast."
I take a quick shower and I dry my hair. I don't know how I'll style my hair. I guess I'll just wait for Sophia.
I'm beginning to feel hungry so I make my way to the kitchen. My mother is already dress up and in full makeup. She's in a mid-length black dress and black high heels. Her eyes are also with a thick black line of eyeliner, as always. She always goes too far when she's going out.
"Melissa, why aren't you already dressed? And your makeup?" She's starting to stress me out again.
"Sophia is coming in about an hour to do my hair and makeup."
" Why?" She asks, a little offended. "I mean, I'm here and I obviously know how to makeup someone. She doesn't need to come, I'll do it." She says and places a plate with pancakes and a pot of honey in front of me.
"Mom, no offense but I don't like the type of makeup you use. Too dramatic for me. Besides, Sophia is great at doing it, don't worry."
"Okay, but I still don't understand why I can't do it." She says and stands up, starting to clean the dishes. "Well, I have to go buy some groceries and I also have to go to the hairstylist. When I get back you better be ready with your clothes and makeup or I'll do it myself.
"Of course I'll be ready mom. Bye." She grabs her car keys and leaves.
The pancakes are great and I already had a cup of milk. But I need something stronger to wake me up. I need straight black coffee.
My mother left some coffee already made so I drink it and start to clean the rest of the dishes.
It's now 8:15 am and I make my bed and put my clothes on top of it. My dress is black and white in a very ballerina form and my shoes also black. Go figure. I still don't know how am I supposed to walk in these killer shoes that Sophia borrowed me but okay... I'll put them now to practice.
I hear a light knock on my door. It must be Sophia.
"Come in , you don't have to knock."
For my surprise is not Sophia.
Shit.
