Melissa's POVIf someone had tell me that I'd be leaving the country for the first time with Harry, I would have laughed in their face. Literally.
This is so crazy.
"I need to talk to you." I tell Sophia from her office door. I really hope I won't find anybody else because I don't feel like telling anyone else about this.
"If you want permission to go out with that boy you've been seeing, no. I'm your mother, I make the rules." Sophia winks and lands a manuscript aside.
"Not permission but-" She's going to flip out. "I'm just here because I wanted you to know- before I leave." She stands up and comes my direction.
"Leave? Where are you going?"
I take a deep breath before the storm starts. "England. London."
And she laughs. She starts laughing straight in my face. "Is this a joke? Is it, right?"
"No, it isn't. I just wanted you to know that I'm leaving today and be back by Sunday, I guess."
She looks at me like I'm a freak. "Today? Melissa, let's just sit down and talk about it."
"There's nothing to talk about. I'm going, I already have my stuff packed on Harry's car." This was all, at first, a crazy thing to do so I can't blame Sophia for looking at me like I'm mad or something. But not now. I need to know Harry deeply, honor the fact that I'm the person who knows him best. And I need this trip to do just that.
"Who are you?" She almost whispers, turning her back and sitting down, her hands holding her head down. "The Mia I know would never do this. She would never jump for someone like this. She would never leave the country with some guy she barely even knows. I honestly don't recognize you, Melissa. You're starting to feel like a stranger to me."
"I'm the same. Maybe you just never knew me completly." I feel the same, deep down I know I am the same. There's just a lot more of me to explore.
Part of me was always hidden. My ideas and thoughts, my dreams and aspirations - everyone always had them figured out for me. Sophia, my mother, Sean... But I had my ideas. Coming here, to New York was one of them, since I was a kid. Nobody thought, even if I had the chance, that I would take it. I'm a lot more than what people think of me.
Sophia exhales and asks. "What time are you going?"
"Any minute. Harry needed to talk to someone."
She takes back on her manuscrip and I know I am being dismissed. "Have a safe flight then."
I hold the door just a bit more. "I never asked for your comprehension, just a simple smile would do it for me. I'll text you when I get there." I close the door and my heart feels heavier and heavier. I hate arguing with Sophia.
Harry wanted to see someone before leaving, so I don't have any idea if he's already on the car. So I call him and start to hear his ringtone when I see him. He's about to pick up the call when he sees me too.
Next to him is a woman I've seen here before, cleaning around the building. She's about my height, dark brown curly hair in a ponytail. The way they act around each other tells that they know themselves pretty well. But the way she smiles at Harry, like a mother would do puts that first thought of intimacy aside.
"I'm going today. This time I'm taking her with me." He looks at me and then clarifies. "Sorry, her being Melissa."
"Alison, nice to meet you Melissa." She holds her hand out and I smile at her. Her features are beautiful although worn out by her age. She looks as someone tough, who has history. She emanates a good vibe but what's intriguing me is how come Harry is that close to her. To somebody.
