Now or Never

I gasped as Sam reached for Kats hand to comfort her, tears formed in my eyes, was it me? Was I the problem?

"We need to do the operation today. Kat's kidney is going to shut down in the next 24 hours, I know you haven't had a lot of time to prepare y/n but it's now or never. But it's entirely your choice" I wiped my tears away with my shaking hand and sucked in a deep breath "I will do whatever it takes to save Kat" I reached for Kat's free hand and grabbed it, she was crying into Sam's shoulder.

"You have one hour to do whatever you want and then we will take you and Kat to get ready for the operation and then we will take you down to the operation theatre" Dr.Brown flipped the page on his notepad and pulled his pen out from his shirt pocket, my throat was so dry not allowing me to swallow my saliva without chocking.

Dr.Brown handed me a piece of paper "if you could read through the information and write your emergency contact and your signature down, I will be back in 10 minutes" "thank you" I whispered as I turned to Kat and Sam, I don't know why I was sad, I was saving Kat's life sure I would've liked to prepare mentally for it but it's what I had to do. "Are you ready for this?" Kat asked turning from Sam and taking my hand "n-no not really if I'm being honest, but I don't care as long as you are safe" she looked at me with her glassy eyes and pulled me into a hug, "thank you" she whispered as sobs wrecked through her.

I placed the form on the table next to Kat's bed ready for Dr.Brown to collect, I turned to meet Sam's watery blue eyes, he got up and walked round the bed to pull me into a hug, he hugged me as if he was going to lose me. "You truly are the best friend ever and the best sister ever" my heart warmed at him calling me his sister, he was like my brother, he was my brother.

As we let go off each other the door opened and a young female nurse walked in holding a hospital robe in her hands "hello I am Julie" she held her hand out for me and Sam to shake, we shook her hand as she looked at Kat "hey there Kat, how you feeling?" She walked over to Kat and checked the machines attached to her "I'm scared I'm not going to lie, but I'm just thankful that I have an amazing friend like y/n" Kat said smiling over at me, a tear formed in my eye. Sam wrapped his arm around my shoulder and rubbed my back, I gasped as I realised that Colby would want to know about this but I knew he would still be on the plane "what's wrong?" Sam asked with a concerned look on his face, I shook my head and took a deep breath in "Colby told me to ring or text him if anything was going to happen especially if Kat and I were going to have the operation early" I sat down and pulled out my phone as Sam crouched down to be face to face with me "y/n he's still on the plane" he took the phone from my hands "I know I know" I said shakily as I started sobbing "I promised Colby that I would tell him if anything was gonna happen but I don't want him to come back, he needs to be with his family. What should we do Sam?" I looked up at Sam's blurred face because of my tears, he stood up and opened his arms as I lunged my whole body against his "I'll handle it don't worry" he rubbed my back softly trying to calm me down "just please don't let him come home please" I whispered to Sam.

"Here you go y/n you can get changed in those toilets there. And once you are changed just wait around in here with Kat and call or text any loved ones, and Dr.Brown and I will be back at 4:50 to take you down to the operation theatre.

I got changed in the bathroom into the blue tie up robe and folded my clothes into a pile, I tied my hair up in a bun. I walked out into the room and placed my folded clothes on a chair and turned to Sam and Kat, they both smiled at me before I walked over and sat down next to Kat's bed, "I'll be with you through all of it" I said taking Kat's hand, Sam just watched and smiled as Kat took her free hand and gently rubbed my cheek.

We sat talking about stuff like YouTube and how long recovery would take when we were interrupted by a knock at the door "you guys ready?" Julie asked walking in the room I turned back to look at Kat who nodded, "yes" I said standing up and giving Sam a hug "take care of her for me" he laughed into my shoulder "I will don't worry Sammy" I giggled out as I wiped my tears.

Kat couldn't walk due to the pain so they had to take her down in her bed "I love you so much don't forget that, I will be right here when you get back" Sam said kissing Kat passionately "I love you too" Kat replied giving Sam one last kiss before they wheeled her out the room with me following.

This was it we were going to have an operation.
