Day off - not

Lily sat down on her bed. “Don’t you like him or what´s the matter” “No, Lily, it´s not like that, I, I just don’t know if he likes me anymore” “Marls I´m sure he does, don’t worry” The two girls went to bed.

Downstairs in the common room Alice was sitting with the five boys. “Alice, what are they talking about” Sirius asked nodding towards the girls dormitories. “You” “Me, what do you mean me?” “I mean, that their talking about you.” James joined the conversation, “Why would they do that?” “Hey, mate, I´m an excellent topic”. Alice grinned:” Great topic, between Lily and Marlene”. “Oh, right, point taken, what are they talking about me for”. Alice shrugged: “Whether or not you like, like Marlene.” “I, of course I do, I thought she knew that” “Yeah, well, when did you ask her out last time, I mean, you haven’t exactly shown her much lately”. James barged in again, as Sirius sat wondering, “But, it can´t work to keep asking them, I mean, I asked Lily a gazillion times, and she´s never said yes.” Well, James, you see, Lily needs proof, that you´re worth her time, and you haven’t done that. She needs to know, that you won´t be an idiot all the time, that you care.” “Well guys, I´m going to bed” Alice kissed Frank goodnight and left.

The next day they didn’t have any lessons, so Lily were in the library, James was training the quidditch team and the others were god knows where, but Sirius and Marlene were alone in the common room. Lily came back and could hear Sirius starting to talk to Marlene, so she stayed and listened. “Marlene?” “Yeah, what is it” “I know, that you´ve been annoyed with me this summer, because I kept asking you out, when you couldn’t, because you didn’t want to lose Lily, but I, I just wanted to throw it all in and give it one last shot.” Marlene sat and listened to him, she thought he´d never sounded so humble and nervous and sweet?? “Do you want to be my girlfriend?” Marlene didn’t answer, but then it seemed like she remembered how to move. She stood up and walked over to him, looked him straight in his eyes, and she smiled a sad sort of smile and then she just kissed him. They both behaved like they´d been waiting forever to kiss one another. James came from quidditch practice and saw Lily standing like she was listening. “What are you doing Lily?” Lily jumped in shock and then shushed at him. She mouthed: “Marlene and Sirius” Then went back to listening. Marlene spoke with a smile on her face: Though I must warn you, Lily is prepared to kill if you hurt me”. “That’s what you talked about yesterday, she gave her approval”. Lily left and dragged James with. “Er, Lily what are you doing, I thought you were listening”

“I was, but I heard what I had to hear, mission completed, their together and now they get their privacy”

“Um, I think there´s something I missed, I thought you despised Sirius, why would you want them to be together”
“Well, you see, he makes her happy, and I just want her to be happy, so…”

“But you don’t like him”

“Do you hate me, Lily?

Lily was shocked at his tone, like he was afraid to ask.

“No, that I don’t, I disapproved of what you did, but I would say it was probably because there was a voice in my head that you were an idiot”

“You mean, that you would have approved of it, if it wasn’t for Snape”

“Um, honestly no, but I wouldn’t have meddled and please don’t mention his name”

“Well, I imagine Sirius is happy now”

“Yeah, he better be”

Before he could answer, they were interrupted. “Lily, why haven’t you answered my letters?” “Go away, Snape”. “Lily…” “I don’t want to talk to you” She turned to James: “Get me out of here now.” James obeyed at once and turned back where they came from. That didn’t stop Snape: “You can´t just walk away” Other Slytherin students appeared in front of them and behind them with Snape. “Nice catch, Severus” one of them said. They threw curses at them and James screamed in agony as he was hit by the cruciatus, because he threw himself in front of Lily to shield her from the cruciatus curse. Lily took her wand and hexed all behind her, whilst avoiding their curses. Then some of the others took her arms and she kicked the guy in front of her in the stomach so he fell and then she smacked her elbows in the other two´s stomachs and petrified all of them. “Idiots” she muttered, then turned and helped James up. “Are you okay”. “Yeah, yeah, fine” he stared in shock at the six students Lily had put down. “Good, then” She levitated them all and they began walking towards professor Dumbledore´s office. They entered and James gave a quick explanation, and Lily had to tell Dumbledore why she had to take all of them on her own. Dumbledore gave James a quick look over. “Very well, I´ll take care of these students, so if you please go down to dinner and afterwards please both go up and get checked by madam Pomfrey.”

Lily and James sat with the rest, but didn’t say anything. Dumbledore stood up and said: “I know I don’t speak at dinner usually, but even though I have some points I would like to give. To James Potter for his bravery at being hit by the cruciatus curse to shield miss. Evans, I award 100 points” All of the his friends stared at James, whilst the entire Griffindor table cheered. “To Lily Evans for thinking clearly, when she faced 1 6th year and 5 7th years, and being able to knock all of them out, even though they kept throwing curses at herself and Mr. Potter I award 100 points”. Again they stared, while Griffindor cheered. “The punishment of these 6 students will soon come. Have a good night.” James looked at Lily: “Should we go up to Pomfrey now?” “Huh, Yeah we better.” They both left. “What in heavens name happened to them” asked Frank. “Dunno”

Lily and James walked in silence until James spoke.

“I´m sorry”

“You have nothing to be sorry for”

“Yeah, it´s my fault you had to face them on your own”

“If it wasn’t for you, I would have been on the floor screaming instead. I´m really grateful I didn’t have to and I think it was good that you were hit”

“Good?”

“Yeah, it would have been better if you hadn’t been hit, but I was already pissed at Snape for intruding and that they hurt you, that just ticked me of, and then they didn’t stand a chance”

James smiled. Madam Pomfrey commanded both of them to stay in the hospital wing over night.
