Lucius was sitting at his desk in his study, like he does every morning, reading the latest edition of the Daily Prophet. He was reading the article on the front page, someone broke into Gringotts.
Mid-article, a snowy white owl came in with a letter. Lucius smiled, thinking it was a little early for a letter from Draco, but he was pleased regardless. Feeding the owl a treat, he untied the letter from its leg. He opened it as the owl flew away and began reading.
Hearing a light knock, he looked up to see Narcissa in the doorway, looking as elegant as ever. Lucius' father chose her because she came from a strong pure-blood family. Lucius had already known her from their years at Hogwarts, only a year below him.
The two had made an agreement on their first "date" that if they didn't have feelings for each other by the end of their courtship, they would confront their parents together. One of Narcissa's older sisters married for love and it inspired the youngest sister.
Lucius grew up in a house that had no affection. His parents never showed love, to him or each other, and he made a promise to himself to not live that way when he started his own family.
The agreement wasn't needed, however. When they finally got to spend time together alone, the two realized they had far more in common and fell in love over night.
"I'm heading down to breakfast, thought we could head down together," she smiled warmly at him. Noticing the scrunch of his eyebrows, Narcissa made her way into the study.
"A letter from Draco," he held up the letter. "He's asking if I know anything about his Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, wants to know if he's an ex-Death Eater or a sympathizer. Apparently, something happened in class yesterday with Harry's scar, the one from the Dark Lord's failed curse, and Quirrell showed questionable behavior."
"He wasn't one, was he? I don't remember you ever mentioning his name before," Narcissa said, sitting back in her chair.
"I couldn't say, honestly. You know I never agreed to that life, Father forced it on me. I kept my head down and only did grunt work to survive, for us to survive. I never met all of his followers. I've been meaning to have a meeting with Dumbledore," Lucius said, glancing at the only locked drawer in his desk. "What do you have planned for the day, love?"
"Well I stopped by to see if my husband would like to have breakfast with me and after that depends on you. I could use some fresh air and get out off the manor, but if it's to be a private meeting, I might spend my time out in the garden with Benedict," she smiled. She's very fond of that elf.
"He seems to be quite happier here, don't you think," Lucius asked, writing a quick letter to Dumbledore.
"I do. He's wonderful, really knows his flowers and great with the plants. Draco will be pleased with the yield, I think. He'll have plenty for his potions. Those Parkinson's were just awful to him," she paused and gave her husband a sly smile. "I may have implied possibly considering their daughter for Draco's betrothed. It was the only way to get them to let him go."
Lucius grinned at his wife, knowing they had decided long ago, before their son was even born, that Draco was going to choose who he wanted to marry. Standing and walking around his desk to his wife, he offered her his arm and they left the study, making their way down to breakfast.

Albus Dumbledore was in his office, pacing, the morning paper on his desk. The vault that was broken into was his. Dumbledore had sent Hagrid to Gringotts to empty it and bring the contents to him.
