**Summer 1985**
A young woman in her early twenties was sitting by the river enjoying the summer breeze and sunset when she heard a grunting noise from nearby bushes.
With a stick in her hand, she slowly made her way towards the sound; once she was close enough, a male figure could be seen lying on the riverbank.
Dropping the stick, she ran towards the male who was injured. The shirt that he was wearing had been soaked with blood.
With her tiny body, the woman half carried half dragged the man towards her house. The small town was famous for its beautiful rivers and well-sought spots for the locals to fish.
From where she had been sitting to where she had found Valerio, the woman was at least five hundred meters away from her home; it was one of the few homes built opposite the river.
Residents that occupied those houses had the lucky view of the beautiful river and its lushes green scenery.
Once she arrived, she dragged the unconscious man inside and placed him on the couch before closing her front door. She then proceeded to check his injuries. The man had a big gash on the right side of his abdomen and a few cuts and bruises, but none were life-threatening.
A few hours passed Lily cleaned and changed the man into a new shirt; seeing that he was unconscious, Lilly left the man to rest and then walked out of the room carrying with her a tub of what was once clear water but was now replaced by bloodstain turning the water red along with the cloth she used to clean the man's wounds.
Lilly had put all her equipment away before making a final check to see that the man had not caught a fever before leaving the room again.
Once he was awake, Valerio instantly became alerted; he got up fast, forgetting about his injuries and said.
"Who are you? What did you do to me? Where am I."
"Me, I'm the one that saved you, and as to where you are, you are in my home. I carried you here. Please calm down."
"I'm about to have dinner. Are you hungry? I made tomato soup for you. It will give you strength; seeing as your stomach was wounded, I advise you to go easy on your diet for a while."
"What do you want."
"Excuse me"
"I said, what do you want? You don't just help strangers out daily, do you? So what do you want."
"If I knew you would be ungrateful, I would have left you for wild animals to eat you. Why do I need a reason to help someone? Can't I be a good local and help visitors pass through here in peace?"
"How do you know I'm not from around here."
"That's not hard to guess, just looking at your clothes. I know you can't be from around here. Besides, this is a small town; everyone pretty much knows each other."
"Look, you can stand there and be on your guard, or you can join me for dinner; it's up to you," said Lily digging into her dinner.
Smelling the delicious aroma coming from the table, Valerio's stomach growled.
Hearing the growl from the male, Lily let out a small smile; she then proceeded to plate a bowl of tomato soup and placed it at the other end of the table before speaking.
"Your soup will get cold if you don't come and eat it now."
Valerio scanned the place before letting his guard down; realising that he was out of danger, he relaxed a little before making his way to the table.
Taking a sip of the soup, Valerio's eyes linger on the small woman across from him; the more he relaxes, the more he feels a calm sense of peacefulness and serenity wash over him, telling him that he is out of danger.
"If you keep looking at me, your dinner will get cold."
"Do you live here by yourself?" asked Valerio.
"I still live with my parents, but are away on a work trip and won't be back till a few days later, don't worry, you are safe here," assured Lily
The kindness Lily showed Valerio in the few days that followed made him fall in love with him, making him think how wonderful it would be if she were his mate.
Lily had a kind, gentle soul, the complete opposite of himself. He is an arrogant and selfish person, a person that doesn't show remorse or guilt of any sort.
A few days later, Valerio's injury had healed tremendously, making his movements more stable, not having to lean on Lily for support every time he needed to use the bathroom.
Once he completely healed, Valerio left, promising Lily that he would return a few days later.Lily and Valerio spend the summer in each other's company, meeting at the riverbank twice a week; the two young friends would go swimming in the river, go into town, or watch a movie together to seek shelter from the summer storm.
At these moments, Valerio wished he was a normal human doing everyday things like falling in love and having a family or growing old together.
But that is just wishful thinking; the more he spends time with Lily, the more he wishes for it to happen until the day that everything changes.
Just as Valerio was thinking about revealing himself to Lily and asking her to become his wife, she introduced him to a person that Valerio grew to hate, her fiance, Fredrick.
Lily not only introduced the two, but she had also given him an invitation to her wedding. The ceremony is to be held next month. Lily had also made Valerio promise her that he would attend.
At the time of the wedding, Valerio had shown himself despite his hatred towards Fredrick. After the ceremony, Valerio saw Lily standing alone and approached her.
Hearing footsteps coming her way, Lily turned around with a glass of water still in her hands; once she saw who it was, her face lit up.
"Hey you, how are you doing? Enjoying yourself," asked Lily, hugging Valerio.
"You look beautiful", stated Valerio
"Thank you, and you don't look bad yourself."
Valerio let out a soft laugh before speaking in a serious tone.
"I came today to say goodbye. Some important matters that need my attention as soon as possible came up."
"Is it about the thing that you can't talk about"
"Yes, it is. I don't know when everything will be better; that is why I wanted to give you this before I leave," said Valerio sticking out his right palm and revealing a beautiful stone
"Oh, Valerio, what is it? It is beautiful."
"It's hard to explain what it is but the most simple term to describe it is a dragon tear or a dragon's gems."
"A gem; it must be valuable. I can't accept this."
"Please take it, I insist."
"Ok, but if there is a day you want it back, I won't give it to you."
"I will never want it back; I have to go now. If it's fate, we will meet again, Lily," said Valerio grabbing Lily's gloved hand and kissing it before turning away from the wedding reception. Not realising it would be the last time he would ever see Lily again.
