Chapter 12: The 'In-Denial' Phase

Hana was sitting in her chemistry exam. They had an hour and a half to complete test, and they were 10 minutes in, yet Hana was already half way through. She was fully focused, filling in this answers like nothing. However this all changed when the events of this morning popped into her head.

'Stupid Kaori, I bet she's trying to meddle again. It's not her place to try and tamper with the people I talk to. Why would she even bring something like that up? Me and Toshi? Just because I call him by a nickname doesn't mean I'm interested in him.

I've never even had a boyfriend before! Wait, I'm seventeen, that's kinda sad. Ugh no. Boys are a pain anyways, I don't need one of those. I mean it's not like Toshi's completely repulsive to talk to, it's actually pretty refreshing.

Since he's so blasé all the time he's never really over the top. He doesn't over-react, so it's not daunting to have conversations with him. But I wouldn't date the guy... hell I don't date to begin with. Kaori just needs to mind her own business.

Yeah. This is her fault. She has no reason to get me all bothered about something that doesn't matter. Yup, I don't care. That's my thing, I don't care about a lot of things. Speaking of not caring, how much time is there left?' She looked up at the clock, and did a double take.

'THIRTY MINUTES?? HOW WAS I THINKING ABOUT THAT FOR SO LONG??'

She flicked through the test to see that there was three pages left. Hana calmed herself down, and quickly went back to focus on her test. 'I'll finish, but I won't have time to properly look over my answers, this is all your fault Kaori!!'

"So... why are you angry at her again?" Mari asked. Hana hadn't spoken to Kaori since that morning, not even giving a reason.
"Well Mari, you can tell Koari that I won't speak to her until she apologised for sabotaging my focus during the exam."

"Babe, we were at separate ends of the exam hall, I haven't spoken to you since this morning with the guys- Ohhhhhh." She smirked and burst out laughing.
"Is there something we missed this morning?" Aya asked.

"Let's just say miss smart girl got all cranky because I questioned the nickname she's using for mr superstar. She must've finally lost her cool." She said wiggling her brows. Hana tsked and continued eating her lunch, occasionally aggressively sipping her juice box.

"Wait, Hana's using a nickname for Ushijima? That's weird, I thought she hated the guy." Mari stated.
"Apparently it's for time efficiency, and also for him to call her Hana like everyone else does, but I'm not so sure. Though she insists that's the reason."

Hana slammed her juice box down on the table and groaned.
"Stop talking like I'm not here. I can hear you," She grumbled before getting up from her seat. "I'm going to the library to study some more before the next exam. Later."

The three stared her down until the door closed behind her and looked at each other.
"She is definitely in denial. Hana would never get so worked up over our teasing if she wasn't so conflicted." Mari said.

"Yeah, even I admit, it's super out of character for her." Aya added.
"Well girls, she's never had a crush before. Although it hasn't fully developed yet, Hana is experiencing stage 2 of falling in love. The in-denial phase." Kaori laughed, and the three continued eating.
