"But Jesus immediately said to them; 'Take courage!  It is I.  Don't be afraid.'"

Eloise studied the board in front of her.  The board contained a map of the town with pins placed at different locations, pictures of certain students in the Northshore Mountain Highschool, sticky notes, scraps of paper with writing scribbled on it, and pieces of string that connected everything together.  At the bottom of the board were 7 empty spots.

Staring long and hard at what would look like a mess to other people, but made perfect sense to Eloise; she made her decisions.

She moved 7 pictures to the empty spaces at the bottom, 4 boys and 3 girls.

"The chosen ones."  Eloise smiled and picked up her phone.

"Don't you think it's weird that she asked all of us to come to her house?" Kayta kicked a nearby pebble on the street.

She was walking from school to Eloise's house- whoever that girl was.  Kayta had heard of her, apparently she was a genius or something.

"I hear she studies the textbooks for FUN!!" Xale exclaimed.  "Who does that?   This girl must be insane!"

"Apparently she sent the message to two other kids- Jem and Milly Wagner," Ashim said, looked up from his phone.  "Ever heard of them?"

"Isn't Jem that dude who got super fast in track and field?" Xale said casually.

"WHAT?" Ashim and Kayta shouted at the same time.

"Yeah something like he suddenly started running super fast and Coach Auggie was so shocked that he let the kids off early—"

"WHAT?"

"Why are you guys freaking out like this?"

"Because Xale, don't you get it?  These kids might have powers like us!" Kayta waved her arms dramatically like she always did when she got excited.

"Ohhh, I never thought of that...."

Ashim rolled his eyes and Kayta smacked her forehead.

"Hey guys!"

The kids turned and saw Star running up behind them, with Ley trailing behind.

"Hi Star!" Kayta waved.

"Whew!" Star stopped to catch her breath.  "We've been trying to catch up with you for a while."

"Really?" Ashim asked.

"You guys walk really fast," Ley panted.

"We are like hares and you are like turtles," Xale said.  His comment received strange looks from all the others in the group.

"That doesn't make sense," Star stated.

"I know," Xale nodded his head.

The five friends eventually made it up to Eloise's house, where they saw her reading a book on the porch.

"Hey Eloise!" Kayta smiled.  Eloise didn't move.

"Eloise?" Ashim was about to walk up the porch steps, when a boy with electric blue highlights whizzed up to him so fast, he didn't even see him coming.

"Don't touch her." he said, as a girl who looked almost exactly like him walked towards the group.

"Yeah, you don't want to make the mistake we made." she said.

"You're... Jem, right?"  Ley asked the boy, seeing his blue hair.

"And I'm Milly.  We've been waiting here a while." the girl said.

"But you're all here now," Eloise got up and opened the front door.  "Please, come inside." The kids followed her inside into the house.

"Everyone, take a seat," she gestured to the seven identical chairs that were placed in a circle.

"Well, this isn't creepy," Xale whispered to Ashim.

"I know.  What is she going to do?" he replied.

"Tell us that we're the chosen ones?" Xale joked.

"I heard that," Eloise glared at the boys, and they sunk into their chairs.  "But yes, in a way, you are."

Star raised an eyebrow.  "Isn't that, like, a Star Wars thing?"

"Well..." Eloise started, eyeing everyone.  "Basically, it means you all got powers and were chosen to defeat the demons."

Kayta felt dizzy.  She had had a gut feeling that she had received her powers for a reason, but she never imagined it to be put to use for such an impossible task.

"How do you know that?  Did you stalk us or something?" Ashim accused.

"Oh, believe me, she stalks everyone," Milly grumbled.  Eloise scoffed.

"I do not stalk everyone," she frowned, clearly offended.

"Yeah, just most people," Milly mumbled under her breath.

"How did you figure out?" Ley asked.

"Well, for one thing, I overheard Kayta, Ashim, and Xale's conversation the other day at lunch, which is when I discovered Kayta had telekinesis."

The trio eyed each other, uncertainty in their eyes.

Eloise continued.  "I was in the class when Ashim went invisible.  I was taking a walk when I saw curtains from a nearby house light on fire from a nearby house, and when the fire had burned the whole curtain, I saw Ashim and Xale through the window."

"What?" Xale whispered, his mind blown.

"I was at the carnival where Ley and Star discovered theirs. I heard about Jem's running, and Milly shocked me many times in science class."

Everyone stared at her, shocked.

"Wow," Kayta said.  "That's... only slightly creepy, actually."

Everyone nodded in agreement, except for Xale.

"Wait a second," he interrupted.  "Now that you know that we have powers, are you going to blackmail us or something?"

"Don't be silly," Eloise rolled her eyes.  "I have powers too."

"WHAT?" Star yelled, accidentally levitating a few feet into the air.

"YOU HAVE POWERS?" Ley jumped up from his chair.

"WHAT ONES?" Star lowered herself back onto her chair.

"Which ones," Kayta corrected under her breath.

"Watch this," Eloise smiled, took a deep breath, and then disappeared.

"Where'd she go?" Jem raised an eyebrow.

"She has invisibility too?" Ashim asked.

"Guys, I'm here," Eloise walked in from another room.  "I teleported."

The group started commenting in excitement and surprise.

"No way!"

"That's so cool!"

"Do it again!"

"How does it work?"

"I'll explain over some cookies," Eloise laughed as she led the group into the kitchen.
