The first day of camp goes smoothly – which isn't a big surprise. When I hired Maddox and Vance, I expected it to run smoothly. Both of them are familiar with motocross and know their shit. The only thing I was mildly concerned about was their ability to work with younger kids. I watched them closely when we were teaching kids how to take corners properly at the learner's loop, judging them based on how well they handled dealing with them. Maddox kept his cool throughout the whole thing, helping the ones who wipes out and started crying, giving them compliments to help build their confidence. Vance was good, too, but I could tell he was getting a little frustrated by the end. He didn't break, though, and I gave him props before he hopped in Maddox's truck and left the campground.
Since then, the sun has set, filling the sky with a darker shade of blue and striking pinks and oranges in the west. As I sit in front of my trailer, working on a bowl of spaghetti and a slice of garlic bread, I watch Maddox while trying to make it look like I'm not staring at him. Okay, more like gaping at him. At the end of the first day, he went through this ginormous mud puddle and soaked his motocross gear just to entertain the kids while they waited for their parents to come and pick them up. Right now, he's wearing nothing but his compression pants and his usual hat, the visor backwards. He's not jacked, but he is toned, with beautiful angles and flawless skin. It's something else to watch him sweating over the fire while he cooks a meal from one of those gourmet dehydrated packets. I can't get enough of the way his thighs and butt look in those compression pants. I can literally see the outline of everything.
My inner hostess wants to go over and offer him some company – because that's what a good hostess would do. But that immature sixteen-year-old girl who had a crush on him wants to stay right here and admire him from afar. I don't remember Maddox ever having such long wavy hair, but I like it, with the hat flipped backwards, his soft curls brushing against his broad shoulders. The more I look at him, the more I begin to understand why practically every girl in high school swooned over him.
I'd like nothing more than to stay cocooned in my comfy chair and continue to enjoy the show so that I can maybe daydream about what it would be like to score a date with him. But I stand up, a bowl of spaghetti in hand, and head over to Maddox's campsite. It's across the white-rock parking lot, surrounded by a dense grove of pine trees and next to a semi-private outhouse. All is quiet tonight. It's getting darker with each minute that passes, the heat of the summer finally subsiding, but it's clear and I can already see some stars in the sky. Everything is damp from the rain yesterday, and the subtle scent of pine, wildflowers, and musk fills my nose as I walk. Whenever I'm up here, be it for the day or hosting the campground, I always feel wide awake. Even a little more down to earth. When I first started coming up here, I was always on edge, wary of bears and other wildlife jumping out of the bushes and attacking me. Wary of every leaf that rustled with the wind. But now? In order for something to scare me, it would need to either chase after me on my dirt bike or literally jump out of the bushes.
