Storybrooke was ruined ages ago. They had almost forgotten what was it like to lose their homes and loved ones for once again. They all blamed the queen of course, and yes! It was her own fault. It was another stupid decision that she considered smart at first... You can say that it was another effort to earn Henry's trust and love that failed successfully. It was a living torture. They were all forced to stand right next to the town line waiting for their destiny to screw over their dreams and hopes. It wasn't another curse... not this time! She was smarter than that. She just wanted to send Emma back to Boston and take Henry to the enchanted forest with her.
It was pretty impossible considering Regina was never the lucky one. She was never the kind of person that anyone would trust to do the job, or the kind of person that was easy to love and cope with. Although she kept lying to herself for years believing that Emma would never take her son away even if miss swan never even tried to separate Regina and Henry she was insecure and she gave up in her own fears and insecurities.
She had lost so many things, that she couldn't even bare the fear of losing a loved one again. That's why she decided to bring the Enchanted Forest back to life again and move back there. At that point she just wanted to hit her head on a wall. She was the reason why she was stuck in storybrooke right now. Last time she saw Henry before she disappeared into the purple
Smoke that had surrounded the entire town within seconds was the previous morning. They had a fight... she had promised to stop using her magic for the sake of everyone and Henry saw her. She was in her black and white colored office working on potions and spells. Although he was young, around 13 years old, he was very much aware that his mother didn't have the kindest intentions. He knew her way too good to actually believe that she was innocent. After all, a deal is a deal. He had run away, specifically to Emma's house and that was probably the last thing Regina needed.
She was like a ticking bomb waiting for the slightest movement to erupt. That's exactly what happened to her as well. She erupted. Henry running away made her feel helpless and alone. Just like the old times where she would walk around king Leopold's castle and no one would notice her grief. No one would notice the pain in her eyes that was slowly eating her alive. She was feeling like a shadow... visible but soundless.
All these memories returned back into her head making her feel like she should stand up for herself and protect the vulnerable girl inside her from pain and loss again. That's why she proceeded to her plans. She wanted to create a spell were she would just transfer Henry and herself in the enchanted forest and the other citizens of storybrook would either follow or disappear somewhere else.
Pretty egoistic I know...
Of course, when her lover Robin Hood managed to change her mind, it was too late. Gold decided to take advantage of Regina's inability to make a fast decision and spilled the magic powder Regina had made all over storybrooke. of course everyone blamed the queen. Even Henry. Deep inside him he knew she loved him to Pluto and back but he needed to stay away.
Regina and robin disappeared inside a purple cloud of smoke and no one saw her since then.
