"La Nuestra? The fuck is that?" Paul inquired angrily as they both sat in their chairs.
Damien became quiet and the memories bolted through his mind. He never expected everything to turn out the way it did. He never expected everything to be connected like this.
The thing he couldn't quite decipher was how Danny got dragged into this. Surely, she worked for Brown, but Damien didn't think it was only because of that. If it was, they would have killed her. They had too many chances to not miss.
But still, a part of him was relieved that they were connected. Now he could get things done quickly and as fast as possible.
One-shot, two birds!
It angered him that Gary had killed himself.
"Damien?" Paul's voice rang through the room and he looked at him with a questioning gaze.
"I asked you a question! Jesus! You never listen to me!" Paul accused him with a pointed finger and Damien rolled his eyes.
"La Nuestra is the biggest drug cartel in the town. The case Chief told us, the first day I was back to work, was about them." He told and Paul's face lit in realisation so he continued,
"Those bastards wanna go across the country now and expand their business. They also happened to be the same guys who killed Kevin." Damien finished and rushed the last line.Paul took a moment to process the new information "Wow. Just wow." He declared after a while.
"I know." Damien agreed with him and they sat in silence for a while.
"So what happens next? That idiot killed himself without telling us who their boss is. Or about anything really."
"I know. We just have to wait for their next move. We don't have any more leads to follow up." Damien confessed worriedly.
"I do not understand how Danny is a part of all of this. Why kidnap her?" Paul expressed his doubts.
Damien had a longing look on his face before he answered, "At first I thought, maybe they were scared that Danica knew something and did it to protect their identity. But now I'm not so sure anymore."
"But why kidnap her? Why not just kill her on spot?" Paul questioned in confusion.
"That is what is my concern too. They had so many chances. But Danica said that their boss wanted her alive. But why? What changed?" Damien fell into deep thought.
He wondered if they knew that he was the one assigned to their case. Maybe it was all just to rile him up. Maybe the guy that killed Kevin knew Damien was the officer. Could it be that guy is the boss?
Now if they do actually know, is it likely that they're going to get to him by using Danica as a bait.
He suddenly felt ashamed of himself that his initial intention too was to use her as bait to find William's killer. But now something changed. Now everything changed. He didn't see her as a suspect or a liar. He solely wanted to protect her.
"Do you think they'll come back for her?"
"Maybe. Maybe not. I don't know.
But we can't take any chances anyhow." He obliged in Paul."Maybe you gotta assign some police protection for the house, man. In case you're not home."
Damien nodded and gave the instructions to him as to who to put and when.
Just then a colleague came through the door, "Hey, the Chief's asking for you." He notified Damien.
Damien nodded at Paul and got up to go to the Chief's cabin. He knocked on the door.
