Was he even at the right place? If he was being honest with himself, which he wasn't often, he had absolutely no idea. But Jack wasn't known for his honesty so, of course he was at the right place. Of course he knew where he was going.

As he pulled himself up the fire escape, the metal bars slick from the recent rain under his hands, he pondered if this was a good idea. Davey was fine, Les had said. Just sick. He'd be back selling papes with the rest of them in a day, two at most. So why was he here? He was wasting time. He still had a full bag of papes at his hip that needed selling for crying out loud.

And yet, even as these thoughts ran through Jack's head he kept climbing. His foot slipped once or twice and he cursed. He was supposed to be good at this stuff. So why did his hands have a slight tremor to them? He wasn't even that high up. He shook his head slightly. He was just cold, that was it. There was a chill in the air and his breath was forming icy clouds in front of his face. He was shivering, not trembling. So he sped up until he was standing on the small metal platform outside what he hoped was the right place. Les, to no surprise, wasn't the best at directions.

Steeling himself, he tapped gently on the curtained window. There was no movement for a few minutes and and Jack was worried he had come to the wrong house, but then the curtain twitched and a grin split Jack's face as Davey's head appeared at the window. Confusion turned to laughter as he realised who it was. He fumbled with the window, struggling to unlock it for a few seconds. When he finally got it open he stuck his head out.

"Jack?" He hissed, "What are you doing here?" His face was pale and goosebumps were appearing on his arms and neck as the cool air blew in from outside.

"Checking on you. Now let me in it's freezing out here,"

Davey coughed and shook his head, a small smile playing at the corner of his mouth as he moved aside and let Jack clamber in through the window. Davey turned, flopping down onto his bed and wrapping himself back in blankets.

"Ok, so why are you here?"

"I already told ya," Jack said, pacing for a few seconds before dropping onto the bed next to Davey. "I wanted to make sure you're ok,"

"Well, now you know I'm fine. Now go. I don't want you getting sick and besides, you still have papers to sell," Davey leaned back against the pillow and shut his eyes. "I wanna go back to sleep,"

"Oh, did I wake you?" Jack feigned guilt.

"Yes you woke me you ass. I have nothing better to do than sleep. And my head hurts so stop talking so loud,"
