Tears stream down my face, it feels weird, since I order them to do so myself with magic. I open my eyes wide, as I make sure to fake some trembling. Just tense my muscles to the extent, tremble, cry and run back. I force my legs to run back, even though I keep them as tensed, causing me to almost trip multiple times, is this what real fear would feel like? My parents taught me to fake fear this way, so I bet it does.
"Myne, what's wrong?" Kurapika asks, panick to be seen in his eyes as I arrive.
"Chemicals... Cloud... Mandy... S-she fell..." Mumble, stutter, panick. Make it all sound real. The slightest fault in acting can result in breaking everything.
"Hey, calm down," Kurapika tries as he walks over to me. I notice how he glances at the forest behind me.
I wrap my arms around him, hiding my face into his chest. People who are scared search for safety. For Myne the only safety is Kurapika at this point, it's not weird for someone who just saw someone get killed.
I make sure to first start focusing on my breathing, even though it isn't needed, before releasing the pressure I put on my muscles. The trembling stops, as I also make sure to stop the waterfalls streaming down my cheeks.
"Can you tell me what happened?" Kurapika asks again.
I nod, taking one last deep breath, before making sure to mumble. "We ran into that girl with the chemicals... She wanted to attack us with acid fog, she said she had just enough left to cover a few metres, so naturally Mandy and I started running. Mandy tripped and get caught up in it."
I can feel how his breathing stops for a split second. "Then you mean..." I nod softly, confirming his suspicion that she has died.
"We shouldn't go back yet. I don't think the acid has faded yet. We should wait here 'til morning and then head out," Kurapika says, sitting down.
He's quite smart, and actually helping me out. By the time he finds Mandy tomorrow, it would be very natural for the fog to have faded, and the burn marks will still be visible. My story will add up entirely and he is the sole reason it will be. He just made my lie even more believable.
"Yo, how are you all doing?"
That voice. The one voice I did not want to hear at this moment. The one voice who could mess all of this up.
"Killua," Kurapika notices.
"What's going on here?" Killua asks, as I let go of Kurapika and look at him.
I open my mouth, then decide to shut back up. I should be careful, he could detect the lie in my voice. Instead I just stare back at the ground with a frown, knowing that people who have been hurt might not have the voice to speak up.
"Mandy has probably died by the hands of the girl using chemicals... Some kind of acid gas apparently," Kurapika explains. "Myne saw it happen as they walked off to talk."
"So they were alone?" Killua asks, inspecting me over.
Damn it, does he know something? Did Mandy tell him something?
"I'll go check it out, my body is immune to a lot of poisons either way," he says before walking off.
Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! This can't be happening. Please, Kurapika make a move. Killua, get scared. Please, come back.
"Oi, there's nothing gas-like around here!"
I failed. Everything failed.
"What do you mean there's nothing there?" Kurapika walks over to Killua's voice and looks around, until his eyes fall upon the blistered and burnt body of Mandy. "Then how did she get those injuries?"
I walked after Kurapika, hoping I can still get out of it all. Maybe if I say the wind took all of it away.
"I'm sure she used some kind of gas... Maybe it quickly evaporates when coming in contact with oxygen, or maybe it has been taken away by the wind," I offer, trying to save face.
"There would be at least traces. There is no wind, and if it followed you, the first idea isn't possible," Killua brings up, breaking all of my arguments. I should've known Killua isn't as dumb as to believe such a lie. The only thing I can do now is hope Killua doesn't recognise the way of killing and hope Kurapika goes with the friends-argument.
"Then you mean to say..." Kurapika concludes, looking at me. "Myne killed her."
"Of course I didn't!" I lie, trying to sound panicked. People panick when being falsely accused, especially be someone dear to them and about something as big as this. "Mandy was also my friend, I would've never done so."
"People can easily lie," Killua says, squinting his eyes a bit and circling around me. "It seems as if something burned her on her entire body, simultaneously, but there's no sign of fire."
"How should I have done that? Kurapika would have seen a fire that big, and I'm not carrying any chemicals on me," I say, looking at the white-haired boy in front of me. "I-I swear it..." I divert my attention to Kurapika. "You may search me and my bag if you want to."
"I know someone who can influence liquids. I was already surprised no one was sent after me..." A shadow covers Killua's eyes, as I lose hope into my own lies.
"I guess you can tell father your mission failed, Illura."
