Chapter 12
I woke up to people shouting in the kitchen. I sighed and got up, but not to go see who was shouting. I couldn’t care less, unless it concerned me, or it made me annoyed.
“Oh, shut up!” I muttered, trying not to trip on any random things that were lying on Ben’s floor. This is the reason why I kept my room tidy- so I wouldn’t slip on anything.
I yawned and stretched. I decided to explore Ben’s room, but I’d have to change my clothes first. Carefully, I walked to the door and opened it, closing it behind me. The shouting became quieter between Fiona and Joe as they argued over the kitchen island. I sighed and rolled my eyes.
“Why don’t you just tell me?” hissed Fiona, eyeing me as I walked past, scowling at them both.
“There’s nothing to tell…”
I didn’t hear anymore because I had slammed my door shut. I needed to go for a run to cool off. The last time I had time for a run was more than a week ago. I slipped off my clothes and tugged on thick black tracksuit bottoms and a white sports t-shirt, with a black zip-up hoodie.
You must be wondering if I’m mad because it’s been snowing. The snow melted off the grass surprisingly quickly, so I’m going to run there. It’s also beautiful so I want to see as much of it as I can.
I tied my hair up in a high ponytail, and left my fringe out. I grabbed my iPod and shoved it in my pocket. I needed to get a new phone fast. I pushed the sleeves of my hoodie up to my elbows and headed out.
Fiona and Joe were still bickering in the kitchen, but abruptly stopped when I grabbed an apple and sat on the counter on the island, on the side so I wasn’t in their way. They both looked at me with unreadable expressions. I realised Joe was shirtless, and was muscular. I didn’t stare, though. I raised my eyebrows as I bit into the red apple and swallowed.
“What? I’m hungry. Go ahead, continue.” I told them, biting again and savouring the juice in my mouth after I’d swallowed. “Whatever. I’m going out for a run. I’ll be back later. Fiona, feel free to stay in my room.”
I finished my apple quickly and lobbed it into the bin on my way out. They were staring after me. Fiona shrieked something indistinctive, sighed and stormed into my room. Joe scowled, looked over at me waiting for the elevator through the open dorm door and marched into his room, slamming the door behind him.
Once I was inside, I turned on my iPod and shoved the earphones in my ears, where they would stay because I put the hooks on them, which hooked them to my ear. I pressed Play Playlist on Repeat Shuffle and dropped it into my pocket. As I began jogging, You’re Not Sorry by Taylor Swift came on and I sang it in my head as I ran.
I completed three laps of the field and jogged up the hill at the side. At the top, I just stood there, my heartbeat going back to normal as I soaked in the stunning view of a snow-capped town.
Enchanted by Taylor Swift played and I unplugged the earphones and tucked them in my pocket while it played on speaker, and I sang at the top of my voice, my voice and music echoing through the field.
There I was again tonight
Forcing laughter, faking smiles
Same old tired, lonely place
Walls of insincerity
Shifting eyes and vacancy
Vanished when I saw your face
All I can say is it was enchanting to meet you
Your eyes whispered 'have we met?'
