"i quit."
He said at last, exiting the lab and letting the door close behind him.

Asgore and Alphys were left looking at each other again. Sure he didn't mean it, right?

But he did mean it. Because the very next day he didn't show up to the lab. He didn't go to Grillby's either, which made the bartender be a little worried for his friend.

Truth was, Sans was at home, feeling horrible. His thoughts were giving him a headache. They were so loud, the short skeleton thought Papyrus could even hear them.

Yes, his brother knew Sans was sad. He saw right through him, into his soul. And Sans told him what happened, in an attempt to quiet his mind. He was happy at least Papyrus understood why he was so scared and why he reacted that way down there. But the thoughts...

Oh, the thoughts!

They never left him alone. And they weren't very nice companions either. He was replaying what happened in the 'true lab'again and again in his mind. Each time more intense, and with the best commentaries too.

You were so pathetic.
Worthless.
You almost died of fear, congrats.
Alphys should have let you die.
She thinks you're stupid.
They all know what a crybaby you are.
Worthless piece of shit.
Broken mess of bones.

He hated to live with all that in his head every hour of the day.
So, two days after the 'incident' as Sans called it, he took Papyrus to the library, as awlays, then he came home and locked himself in the bathroom.

Or he thought he locked himself in the bathroom.
His mind was dizzy anyway, and nobody came by their house, so the door might as well stay open.

He made cuts all over his right hand. Opening wounds from before, that didn't have time to heal and going all the way to his collar bone.

'one hp.' he told himself. 'you only have one, don't over do it.'

But even this thought, that was so clear between all the others became a blurr.

As Sans lay on the bathroom floor, in what felt like a dusty pile of blood, he couldn't think anymore.

At least he managed something. He quieted his mind. But the headache was still there. And now it wasn't only his head, but his arm, too.

He was sore. And tired. And extremely dizzy.
And now the silence he craved so badly was driving him even more insane.

The water still poured in the sink. He wanted to close the tap, but that meant getting up. And he had zero force to do that.
A clock ticked annoyingly in the living room. And Sans counted every tick of the clock...

45...
46...
47...
48...

Until he passed out.

When he woke up again, blinding lights shone above his head. If Sans had believed in heaven, he would have said that was it.

But he didn't. He just sat there, wondering where he saw that ceiling before.

"O-oh, t-thank god you- you're awake!"

Ah, yes, the lab. At least he wasn't down in the other one. Alphys had the brain cells to not make him go there ever again.

"y-you really scared me!"

Sans wanted to ask why, before everything came back to him like a fever dream. The horrible feeling in his head, the sore arm, lying on the bathroom floor.

"did you find me, alph?"

"W-well, y-yes. And y-y-you be-better be grateful I d-did! Y-you a-almost..." her voice cracked.

Damn, had she been crying over him?

"but i didn't die," Sans said trying to get up, only to realise he had no strength in his right arm. Well, it didn't bother him to lay down on the couch anyway. "didn't i lock the door?"

He didn't mean to say that out loud, but it just slipped out his mouth.

"SANS!" Alphys seemed mad at only the thought of him hiding what he was doing.
"Sans, y-you didn't l-l-lock the door. I j-just came b-by to g-give you s-s-some books you forgot h-here and s-saw you... oh god!"

She covered her mouth, as the image of Sans lying there, almost just a pile of ash, filled her mind. But she didn't let the tears come out. She had to be tough. At least for now.

"S-sans. H-how long have you been d-doing t-t-this?"

Sans didn't respond. He lived in that house for a year and a half now. And he did it since day one of living there. Because he was taught he was in this world only for punishment.

He didn't do it everyday. Just when... he felt like it. And he didn't have a schedule for it either. He remembered once a whole month and a bit passed without any cuts.

"S-sans h-how long?"

"not much."

"Good. T-then don't do it a-again."

As if it was that simple. He knew he had to stop, too. But he didn't know how. And if he didn't know how, then he couldn't do it.

This gave him another headache.

"where's paps?"
The thought of his brother worried him. He knew he sent him to 'school' that day but he didn't take him home...

"i have to get to the library!"

He tried to get up again only to feel his right hand almost breaking. The pain was so bad.

"S-sans your brother is with U-undyne."

Sans quickly made a list of what he knew about her.

She was almost head of the Royal guard, good friends with Alphys, probably why the scientist let her take care of Papyrus. She was trust worthy enough to be liked by the king himself, but she was also acting on instinct a lot, which made her a little dangerous in Sans's opinion.

But then he remembered: Papyrus likes her. He wants to be exactly like her, in fact.

"he'll be fine with her."

"T-that's what I thought." Alphys commented.

She changed the bandages on Sans's arm, which stung like a bitch. Then talked with him about a lot of stuff.

Well, more like she forced Sans to tell her a lot of stuff. But the whole talk ended up giving him a little more confidence.
And the pills that should get rid of the thoughts were a great bonus.

Now all he got to do was get Papyrus from Undyne and buy him a nice cream. No, buy both of them a nice cream.

Because, for the first time in a while, Sans felt like he deserved something.

A/N: 1123 words. That's a funny number. I really like this chapter, how sad and depressing it may be.
