"There are some things in the world that are complete mistakes and I don't need to put up with them."
"Yeah? Like what?" Grillby shouted.
No response.
"Like me?" He yelled even harder.
"Like you!"
And, as Grillby expected, his father managed to set fire to a part of the table. The younger fire elemental rushed out of the kitchen. He passed right through the living room and outside the house, slaming the door behind him. He sat on the porch, letting his head fall in his arms. He rubbed his face in an attempt to calm down, aware of his flames growing bigger from the frustration.
The people in the living room exchanged glances, almost as if asking eachother who is going out there to console him.
"I'm going." Grillby's mother said, answering the unspoken question.
She quietly opened the front door and sat next to her son.
"If you tell me you're sorry I'm leaving." Grillby said, not kifting his head from his hands. Therefore, his words cane out a little muffled, but they were said loud enough so the woman could hear.
"No, sweetheart, I couldn't ever apologize for somebody else's mistake."
Grillby raised his head and looked at his mom. She was looking away from him, to the road that passed in front of their house.
"Did you really change your opinion on me?" He was hopeful, but the question came out bitter.
His mother lookedat him and answered with another question. "Do you really think I would have invited you here if I didn't want you to forgive me?"
Grillby shrugged. "Yeah, reasonable." He paused for a moment and his mum looked away again. "So you... aren't angry at me anymore?"
He sounded like a child; a child that made some dumb mistake, and, after being grounded, pleaded for his mother's forgiveness.
His mother turned to face him again, this time taking his hand in both of hers.
"I don't thing I've ever been angry with you. I was just closed-minded and... scared."Grillby let himself chuckle. "And I was here thinking homophobia isn't a real fear."
"Oh, honey, but I wasn't scared of you. Or of your sexual orientation. I was scared of the world, and what the world would do to you and to me and to our family."
She sighed and closed her eyes for a moment. "Putting my well being before yours wasn't the best decission I made in life. And I really regretted it. But I also knew we both needed time before we addressed this issue."
Grillby nodded. He knew that, if his mum had called any earlier to say she's sorry, he wouldn't have listened to her and he wouldn't have believed it.
"However," She continued, "I can't make your father change his opinion, no matter how hard I try."
Grillby nodded again. Pain suddenly numbed him and he wasn't able to say anything regarding his dad.
His mother, as any mother would, sensed the sadness and pulled him closer. Grillby let her hug him, not really responding with anything when her arms wrapped around his body. She rested her head on his shoulders and shortly, Grillby heard her sobbing quietly.
"Oh god... my baby... my beautiful son..."
He pat her back and finally hugged her back. "I love you too, mum."
When they came back inside, Grillby was met with a rather funny view. Sans was holding Fuku up using blue magic. Flamo was looking a little pissed, while he held what Grillby guessed was a jar of cookies. Ignis was a little more worried, however.
"Sans, what's going on here? Please put my daughter down before you hurt her." She asked.
Sans glanced at the young fire elemental, who was moving her hands around pretending to fly.
"caught this little fella tryin' to get some cookies before dinner."
"I didn't try anything they were right there!" She pointed to a rather high up shelf.
"Yeah well, I put them there so she wouldn't reach them." Grillby's mum chimed in with a smile on her face.
"I almost got 'em!" Fuku protested.
"ya actually almost broke your neck trying to climb that high, but sure, call it however you like."
Flamo laughted and almost choked on the cookie he was eating, which earned him an angry look from his wife.
"If she can't eat any before dinner, neither can you!" Ignis concluded, taking the jar from her husband and putting it back on the shelf.
Sans finally put the kid down. Fuku stuck her tounge out at him, but Sans igmored her, flopping on the couch instead.
Grillby sat next to him."have i told you i like that kid?" He said, laughing.
Grillby shurgged."you ok?"
Grillby nodded."fine, don't talk if you don't wanna. i get it. but please take note of the fact we're still eating at the same table with him."
Grillby knew Sans was reffering to his dad. He nodded again.
Despite the tension in the air, the dinner wasn't at all a quiet one. Grillby and his family talked about the last six or so years, catching up on the stuff that they missed. Fuku filled everyone in with the godsip at her school. Flamo and Ignis said something about trying for a baby, which earned them a groan from Fuku. Sans insisted that little siblings aren't as bad as it first sounds.
Grillby talked about his new restuarant and that he and Sans were living together now.
"So, you're basically the monster reincarnation of princess Tiana." Fuku comented with food in her mouth.
Sans leaned over the table, as she was sitting right in front of him, and they high-fived. Grillby just gave a half hearted smile."We could watch the movie after we eat!" Fuku insisted.
"And you could try not to talk with your mouth full of food!" Ignis warned, pointing her fork at her daughter.
Grillby's dad didn't take part in any of the talking. He excused himself early from the table and said he was going upstairs. Not that it bothered anyone...
They did actually watch the movie afterwards. It was a lot of fun, mostly because all six of them tried to fit on the one single couch.
After the movie, Grillby's mother offered to bring everyone, except Fuku, a glass of wine. Flamo refused, because he still had to drive home. Sans refused as well, because he wasn't really in the mood for alcohol.
"a bottle of ketchup will do for now..." He said. No response came. Sans looked around to see a bunch of worried faces. Grillby exploded into laughter, which made the family look even more worried.
"Is this a prank? Did you two plan this?" Fuku asked, not knowing if she should laugh too or not.
"That's the best part." Grillby said between weehezes. "It's not a prank."
Fuck. Sans shook his head. Of course they looked confused. He keeps forgetting it's not normal to just gulp on ketchup.
"let me... clear things up. i'm pretty sure it's a skeleton thing."
Sans knew all to well it wasn't a skeleton thing. The ketchup craving came after one of Gaster's experiments. He played with one of his nerves or something, Sans didn't know all the details, he was passed out at that point. But it left him wanting to drink ketchup.
"yup. a sleleton thing. i like drinking kethcup. it's getting me just a little drunk..."
"Kinda like beer." Grillby finnished.
Sans didn't remember if he ever drank beer but he agreed.
"like beer.""Ok..." Ignis rushed to the kitchen to get the wine and the ketchup.
Sans tried not to sigh as he realised, once again, that normal people usually have only one or mostly two ketchup bottles in their fridge. So he would probably change his mind and drink some wine afterall.
A/N: I totally didn't translate "fire" in a random language to find the name "Ignis". Yup. Totally. ☆ 1330 words. See you, dears!
