NINI'S BEDROOM

"eek!"

nini flinches at the jumpscare on the movie we're watching, burying her head into my shoulder so she doesn't have to look at her computer screen. we're laying in her bed snuggled up under all of her fluffy blankets watching some random scary exorcism movie we bought for ninety-nine cents on youtube movies. to anyone else, what we're doing would probably--definitely-- look like a date.

but it's not.

for nini and i, this is just an average friday night (or saturday morning, because it's like one a.m right now). we're not not a thing, i guess? i don't know. nini can be really naive, and doesn't pick up on signals when i send them. we've never talked about what we are, but i'm assuming the label is just really close best friends? i mean, i've grown up with her. i don't remember a time when nini wasn't always by my side, and i wasn't by hers. i love her, but i'm not in love with her, you know? i let out a little laugh as i plant a kiss to the back of her head, which is still buried into the crook of my neck.

"okay, you can look now," i tell her after the scene ends.

"mm, thanks," she says, turning her head to look back at the computer but leaving her head on top of me.

"i don't know why i paid a whole dollar for us to watch this just so you can look away the entire time," i joke.

"well you knew it was coming, you picked a scary movie!" nini says with a smile, picking her head up to look at me.

"you could've just told me to pick another one!"

"yeah, but you wanted to watch this," she says. that's what i love about her--she doesn't care as long as i'm happy.

"i would've watched what you wanted to watch, nins."

"right, so you wouldn't mind if i just put high school musical on right now?" she jokes as she sits up to grab the computer.

"nononoono-" i laugh while wrapping my arms tightly around her waist and pulling her back down and closer to me.

"ricky! let me go!!" nini giggles, squirming to get out of my arms.

"i think i'm good like this, neens. i could use another pillow," i say, resting my chin on nini's shoulder from behind her.

i can't see her face, but i know she's still smiling. we get settled like this for a moment, before her phone dings from across the bed.

"hey, will you get that?" she pulls her arm out from under the covers, taking the phone from my hand after i grab it. i lean over her to see what's going on, because it's weird that someone would text her this late at night. her face lights up at the screen, and her fingers immediately move to type out a response.

"who's texting you at one in the morning?" i ask.

"oh, it's just e.j."

"who?"

"my boyfriend, silly goose!"
