Venice

In the hotel, which was on the mainland, Kitty took a shower while I looked at my face in the mirror. I guess we were both comfortable enough around each other to do that, although it was still weird.

“Hm…” I mumbled, running my thumb over the wound on my cheek I had gotten a while back, all the way in the first few days before I met Kitty.

I heard the water stop in the shower so I slipped out of the room. Bored and lazy, I threw myself onto the bed and checked my almost-dead phone.

I didn’t respond. I didn’t want to. Too much bullshit going around. My reaction to the glass door to the balcony being fractured was close to none.

Now what?

Kitty walked out of the bathroom, wet but with his clothes on. “What was that?”

I got up and grabbed my gun from the drawers under the mirror, passing Kitty’s handgun to him. A light from the chandelier above our heads went out. “Whoever it is, they have horrible aim.”

I waited until the gunshots were over to slowly open the glass door. Crouching down, we couldn’t see anyone. “Maybe they left.” Kitty suggested quietly.

I glanced at him with a dirty look. “Don’t be stupid.”

Four metal claws of a grappling hook latched onto the balcony rails. Without thinking I jumped up, grabbed the back of a confused Kitty’s shirt, and dragged him back into the room. Kitty was already heading for the door when I slid the door shut.

“They might have bad aim,” Kitty started as we ran down the hallway. “but they have a grappling hook.”

“Kitty, I would like it if you would shut up.” I growled, pushing the door to the stairs open. With Kitty falling behind I grabbed his hand. “Come on.”

On the second floor I let go of him to open the door. I looked out the window, trying to see if our attacker was on the ground or in our room. But by that time they would probably be inside the lobby or our room.

I bit my knuckle and stepped back. Kitty, letting out a hum of satisfaction, found the window’s lock and opened it. I stuck my head out and surveyed the ground below.

I spotted our room's balcony, which was missing the grappling hook. So they were upstairs. Kitty and I ran back down the stairs, burst through the lobby, and our the doors.

"Look out—" Kitty warned, and I just barely caught a glimpse of the shooter in the balcony as Kitty dragged me aside.

We couldn't shoot in public. It was too risky, so we ran down one of the city's many alleys. You could get lost easily in there, but I trusted Kitty.

We paused to take a breath. "Do you think they followed us?" He asked.

I smacked his shoulder. "Of course they did."

"God..." He murmured, and then a bullet whizzed past us, just barely hitting Kitty. "Whoa."

"Come on!" I exclaimed, and we started running again. There was nowhere for a person to shoot other than from the roof, so we needed a way to get back there.

"There." Kitty said, pointing to a fire escape ladder on the side of nearby building. I kept watch as Kitty jumped up, grabbing the stairs and dragging them down. "Come on."
