My Hero

The Han River was dark in the absence of light. I couldn't help but stare down at it. It was so beautiful, but foreboding. Something felt off.

I kept climbing the rickety old metal ladder to the top. There was a flat area roughly a meter wide to walk on, and then the slanted roof, which was entirely made up of glass.

That warehouse was bigger than the rest. Why didn't I beeline for it instead of going around killing people and tasting blood? I swallowed.

There was no way inside. Or at least a way inside that was evident. I searched around the top, keeping low, until I found a way inside.

It was one of those box-like ventilation shafts. It was off, of course, not circulating air, and I was lucky enough to find that the grille was loose.

Ventilation shafts are risky. They're loud and not built for people to crawl through, so it's easy to fall through. But that one was spacey and vertical, so the only hard part was descending my way down.

With one foot on the side of the shaft and my right shoulder painfully pressed against the other side of the shaft I unscrewed the nails of the grille using my pocket knife then picked it up, haphazardly putting it to the side.

Now how do I get down there?

It was a long drop, maybe fifteen to sixteen meters, or 45-50 feet. I could jump to one of the support pillars, but that would be too dangerous.

A rope would be pretty handy. Oh well.

Wait, maybe I could swing onto one of those (very rusty and probably unstable) metal shelves? It might not fall. The boxes look heavy enough.

...

Damn, there's no other way.

After sticking my head down to see if there was anyone nearby, I lowered myself down and immediately regretted it. My hands held onto the thin edges the screws went into, and that was the only thing holding me.

After taking a deep breath to regain my strength I swung back, then forth, then back... and let go, landing on the shelf. Just barely.

Oh shit. Ohhh shit.

The shelves started to topple over. I thought quick. I couldn't stop it, and it would be like a chain reaction of loud noise and Ziploc bags of weed.

At that thought I swung myself again, trying to make it fall harder. If I was right, I could create the biggest distraction ever.

Cha cha real smooth.

I jumped off just before the shelf hit the ground, boxes ripping open. I covered my nose at the smell and watched in the shadows as they all toppled over. There were shouts as chaos ensued, for some reason.

Gotta blast--

But I didn't even know where Kitty was. Thank god there was only two doors to open. The one to the entrance and one upstairs.

Gunshots went off. I don't know if they were directed at me, but I started running anyway. Up the empty, broken stairs and peering inside each of the rooms. They looked like the bedrooms in jail.

I opened the last one after I saw a hint of pink. Kitty laid on the bed, clearly struggling to get out. I grabbed they key hanging on a hook and grabbed his wrist to unlock the shackles. He jerked.

"Chill, it's me." I hissed.

"Oh, great." He hissed right back. "Change your mind?"

"No." The first one unlocked and Kitty's hand flew to his face, pulling down the blindfold as I unlocked the other cuffs.

"I must admit. It's not that bad to see your annoying face." I unlocked the last shackle and he sat up in front of me. The bed was a little tall, so his eyes were about level with my lips.

I folded my arms. "Just a few months ago you called my face lovely." I said nonchalantly.

He smirked and leaned forward a little. "You remembered that little thing?" He chuckled, eyeing my lips.

The door burst open and in a split second I threw my knife at the man's forehead. He screamed and backed out of the room, dropping the gun and trying to get the knife out.

I grabbed Kitty's wrist and pulled him up. "Now's not the time." I reminded him, grabbing the gun and dragging him out. All we had to do was make it to the front door.

"Oh? When is the time?" Kitty purred as we ran down the stairs.

We were unnoticed in all the chaos of people trying to sort the boxes, or whatever they were doing. Some were lying on the ground wounded. Were those the gunshots?

"I'm starting to think you forgot our argument." I growled, trying to ignore him entirely.

He slipped his small wrist out of my grasp and intertwined his small fingers with mine. "I'm willing to forget it~"

Shut up already!

I just huffed and brushed off his words.

"He's gone!" Someone shouted above all the others. A whole different kind of chaos erupted, drowning out the bullets directed at us. Kitty giggled as I pushed open the door.

He let go of my hand and I followed him down the concrete ground. Admittedly, it felt amazing to run. It felt so amazing.

The wind ghosting over my hair and my skin felt amazing. The fact that we were running from people trying to kill us felt amazing.

Suddenly Kitty grabbed my forearm and yanked me around a corner. We slipped in between two moving containers. For him it might have been easy, but a tad bit harder for me.

They ran straight past us, but we waited a minute or so to catch our breath and make sure they were truly gone.

"That was fun." Kitty cooed into my ear. I shivered and elbowed him away before stepping out.

I looked around and saw no one. Kitty slipped out as well and as I turned to him he grabbed my shirt and yanked me towards him. I braced myself with my hands on the metal container, which put me in an embarrassing position.

He let out a hum that sounded like a chuckle, putting a hand on the back of my nape. I blinked a couple times and took a step back, shoving him against the container. His eyes widened.

I pointed at him. "Don't even try it." I grabbed his wrist and started to drag him away. "Come on, I'm taking you back." Then I added, "To your place."

"Wait, wait." He sounded serious so I let go and turned to face him. "I learned some things there. They're planning something."

I sighed and looked around. "Okay, come on."
