Ring. Ring. Ring.
"Hello?"
"Kong! Where the fuck are you? Everyone is freaking out!"
"I'm coming, I'm coming. I'm on my way. I will be there literally in 5 minutes!"
"Hurry up Kong!"
"I'm trying May."
I had barely ended the call when my phone lit up again.
"Hello, dad..."
"Kong! Where are you? All your sisters are freaking out. I don't know how to calm them and I..."
"Dad I'm coming. I will be there in less than 4 minutes ok. Actually make it 3. Don't worry dad. I'm right there."
"Come soon son."
I twisted the accelerator on my bike as I sped through the streets to rush to the hospital. It had been less than half an hour that I had gotten a frantic call from one of my sisters that mom felt sudden pain rise up in her abdomen and was rushed to the hospital. Naturally within the next 5 minutes my entire family had given me frantic phone calls before they had even finished tying the shoelaces on their footwear before rushing to their respective cars.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Cause no matter how loudly we scream at each other, or how long our fights last, when it came to my mom, especially during her pregnancy, no tiffs, no egos, no quarrels big or small existed between any of us. So if any of them called me at three in the morning cause they needed me I would be hoping right onto my bike and driving straight to them. I mean my folks didn't raise an asshole you know, no matter how much I like to give off that impression.
Thankfully, it was only a few moments later that I pulled into the hospital lot, haphazardly parking my bike that was surely going to lead to a ticket but I didn't even care as I made a mad dash towards the building. Too impatient to wait for the elevator, I took two stairs at a time while I raced up towards the top floor where I knew my mom generally got admitted in the rare occasions the army of doctors couldn't treat her at home. My pulse raced in nervousness as my feet practically glided over the smooth, eerily clean smelling floors.
"Mom!"
Throwing the door open in one loud bang, the words instantly evaporated from my lips as I took in the scene playing out in front of me.
Each of my four sisters huddled around my mom on the bed, furiously bawling their eyes out, while my Dad sat on the chair close by with his body slumped over, his head buried in both his hands.
I swear in that moment I truly understood the meaning of my heart instantly morphing into a block of lead in my chest as I felt my world implode within me.
"Mo...mom? D...dad?"
Words stuck in my throat while I felt a tear prickle the edge of my eye, without even knowing what I was witnessing, but simply the thought of any distress to my family was ripping my heart out.
I took one more step further into the room to finally find out what everyone was crying about when suddenly I felt a friendly tap on my shoulder in the most unexpected manner.
"Oh hey Kong. You are finally here huh?"
And that's when confusion slapped me right in the face as my best friend sashayed into the hospital room with two hands loaded with coffee and the broadest grin on his face.
Ok, what?
Why the fuck was Aim smiling ear to ear?
"Why the fuck are you smiling ear to ear?"
