Chapter 22
It has been about two months since we got that call from the hospital Gale was staying at. I can't believe he is coming home today. He had to stay another month because he wasn't done healing. All my wounds have healed with no pain or scars left.
Desiree, Jack and Linda haven't left. Linda is my mom's only sister so it was comforting for my mom to have her there.
Since I didn't go back home with Eli, we went and got Sassy so I could show her to everyone. She absolutely loves my family. She adored Jack and ran around with him all day, Jack had the kind of energy Sassy was looking for.
My dad had gone to the airport to pick Gale up. I was sitting with Desiree as Jack played with Sassy.
Me and Desiree have been nearly inseparable, she didn't want to do anything with out me and I loved it. I want to have a kid like Desiree one day or even like Jack. Although he is a crazy little thing, when you actually talk to him one on one with no distractions he is a sophisticated little man, very smart.
I sat on the couch with Desiree and Eli waiting as I heard Jack scream, "Their here, their here!"
I smiled and looked down at Desiree, she had the biggest grin on her face.
They walked in the door and right then a scar was evident on his left cheek that slashed through the tip of his eye. It when from his hair line to his chin, barely getting his lip. He still had his perfect smile that could light up a room.
I could feel the tears streaming out of Desiree's perfect little eyes. She jumped out of my lap and into Gales open arms. He kissed her head as she cried into his shoulder.
My aunt Linda and my mom are really close so when Jack and Desiree were born she was over here all the time getting help with the little ones since Linda is a single mom. Desiree grew up with us for the longest time until she was four and jack was five or six.
Jack shed a few tears as he hugged Gale but he wiped them away quickly thinking boys don't cry, it was the cutest thing.
Grant gave him a big hug and they shared a few words. I stood up and walked up to Gale and saw that he had another scar on his arm.
I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him for a long time, I didn't want to let him go. I had been wanting, correction-needing, this hug for so long. It was a hug that told me everything was going to be okay even though he didn't know a single thing about what was going on.
I finally let go and wiped away the tear that escaped. "I missed you." I lightly punched his arm trying to keep in my tears with a smile.
"I missed you, too." he pulled me back into his arms and I began to sob. I had held everything in for too long, I needed this.
Gale held me until I was done then I let him talk to mom and dad.
I went back to Eli and sat back beside him. Letting him wrap his arms around me in a comforting hug.
*************
When Gale had caught up with everyone, including Sassy who was more than happy to meet a new person, he sat everyone in the living room saying that he had news.
We all sat there anxiously waiting for the news.
He sighed, "Okay so I have been informed that I have been medically discharged."
We all gasped, "Wait I thought they said that there was no major damage done?" my dad asked.
"Well, that was the case." he sighed again, "The reason I had to stay an extra month was because there was damage to my eye, I told them not to call, only to inform you that I would be staying longer. Anyway, they had to do surgery on my eye and they couldn't fix it.
"I am legally blind in my left eye. I can still see, but not clearly."
I put my hand over my mouth. "What?" my mom asked. "Why didn't you let them tell us?!"
"I didn't want you to act like this when I wasn't here to tell you." he answered lightly.
I could tell this was hard for him, he would no longer be doing the thing he loved. He would now have a normal life, have to find a normal job, have to find a house, have to do normal people things.
"I'm sorry." I said.
He shrugged, "It's okay, I will live." he smiled.
My mom gave him a hug again, "My baby boy's staying home." She smiled and cried tears of joy.
"Yep." he hugged her.
I wanted so badly to comfort him but I had no idea how.
I walked and sat by Eli and set my head on his shoulder. Gale began to converse with mom, dad and Linda about what he was going to do as Desiree slowly fell asleep in his arms.
My eyes began to get heavy as sleep took over. I put my head in Elijah's lap and put my legs on the arm of the couch and fell asleep with Eli smiling down at me.
****************
I woke up with my head on a pillow. I looked around for Eli and I didn't see him.
I got up to look for him but stopped when I reached the kitchen. There Eli and Gale stood talking laughing getting along.
My parents were more than likely still asleep, it was about seven in the morning and they were tired, waiting for Gale to return.
I stepped closer but made sure I was hidden so I could listen to their conversation.
Eli was comforting him. He must have read my thoughts yesterday about how I wanted to help Gale but couldn't. Of course he knew what Gale was going through, he has been alive for like one hundred years.
'I know your listening and it is one hundred twenty two.' he spoke in my thoughts. Talk about dating an older man.
'Sorry.' I smiled.
I knew Eli was helping him so I went back to the couch and turned on the TV and let Eli do his thing.
