(I had a brain burst of ideas when I was thinking about him this morning. NOT IN THE CREEPY WAY!)
1) He was put into a homosexual correction camp when he turned thirteen, he would've stayed there if Liu didn't go telling everyone so their parents would get pulled up about it.
2) He is particularly blind because of the fire, but he refuses to wear glasses so his reading is very very poor.
3) Jeff is a ball of energy, and stays in the same cabin as Ben, Liu, Vailly and Lyra this does mean they all get woken up by Jeff at three in the morning because he's being reckless.
