Well, I headcannon that if the soul is worthy of redemption and isn't abusive they can have another chance. However, they have to feel a strong emotion, it could be anything from worry to vengeance.
Also, when you're spirts finally forgotten you disappear completely. Memories keep you alive.
After all; They're always with you, because you remember them.
