Chapter Eight: An Upheaval

Today I'm feeling really and truly terrible.

You know that feeling when you're feeling down, but have no idea what the problem is?

Life is great right now and I'm happy with how things are going, but I'm feeling extra lonely and sad today. So, I decided to leave my apartment after spending two hours sitting in the dark and eating every piece of carb-kinds of food that I could find. I'm lucky that I walk enough to burn off all the toxic food that I consume on a weekly basis.

I went to the book store just to try and lighten my mental state. I said hi to Andrew, but Olivia and Amelia weren't in today. We had a short conversation about how his plans for work were coming along and then I walked along the isles of the store, browsing through the shelves that I had not yet explored.

I eventually came across something that caught my eye and picked it up. The cover of the book was solid black, hard cover. It had deep, gold letters printed into the leather with small symbols to accompany them. I turned the book over to read the blurb. To say that the book was mysterious was an understatement, because the blurb had only one word, nine letters: 'Petrichor'.

I searched the meaning of the word on my phone, the scent of rain on dry earth. Considering that I found the book in the romance isle I tucked the book under my arm and marched over to the register. I was sold.

It was mysterious, alluring and enchanting. One word, a word that describes one of my favourite things. This book was something that I needed right now.

"I can see why you'd buy this, from what I know about you so far." I smiled at him. "Enjoy." He said as he handed me my book and change.

"I'll see you on Thursday." I smiled back.

"See you then."

I walked out of the store, the smell of pages and coffee disappearing behind me. Making my way toward my apartment I looked down at the first page of the book, completely and utterly curious as to what the book could possibly entail.

I reached the building and started up the steps toward my apartment. As I ascended the stairs I came face to face with Oliver, Noah, William and Carter coming down the stairs.

"Look who it is." Noah started.

"Espen." Oliver smiled playfully.

"Ohhh right." William added, recognising me later than the others.

"Hey." Carter greeted, a slight smirk playing on his lips.

Ever since I helped clean up Carter's mess that day in the hall he has been pleasant to be around as I pass him in the halls. We haven't hung out or anything, but we smile and greet each other as we pass, his scowl always present until I give him a grin. I know now that he uses his scowl to scare people off and I've become used to it, but it's still intimidating nonetheless.

"Hey guys." I smiled at each of them. "Where you off to?"

"We're going out to get some food for Carter's fridge. He has nothing in there." Noah stated.

"There isn't anything in there, because you idiots eat it all." Carter chirped.

"Then we will be returning to play some more video games." William further explained, ignoring Carter. Carter only rolled his eyes.

"I'm not surprised that you guys still play video games." I chuckled behind my hand. "Aren't you guys like... twenty?"

"Twenty one." Oliver corrected.

"I'm twenty two." William raised his hands, feeling superior.

I laughed. Children.

"You want to join?" William offered.
