Chapter 2
Pandora's POV
"Where were you?" The Psionipath asked.
Exilium was moved to the dessert and I had just survived body temperature regulation. It was lunchtime and I put a watery fruit in my murky, black face as the Psionipath walked up to me. I didn't want to speak or use shadow whispering, so I used a different method. I spelled 'I don't want to join' in shadows to the left of me.
"Why?" The Psionipath asked again.
I wasn't going to answer that and alert the Black Swan that I still had my memories intact, so I stood up and walked away. I found a spot in the shade and I gathered the shadows and covered myself with them. The Psionipath ran past me and I stayed in my spot until I saw the other Waywards go back to their tents. I followed the red Waywards and Couch Red into a small lake.
"Now we are doing water breathing," Red told the Waywards.
I got dressed in a weird suit that looked like an astronaut suit and stepped into the lake. I held my breath and thought of the calming swish of the water. After two hours the lesson ended and I made a new record. I walked back to my tent and sat on my frayed bed in the corner of the tent. Again the Psionipath sat next to me.
"Why?" he asked me (or I thought he sounded like he).
When I still didn't answer he sighed.
"Let me be more specific. Why don't you want to join the Neverseen?"
I froze. So he wasn't with the Black Swan. He was with the rebel group trying to destroy them. I looked at him and spelled 'If your with the Neverseen. I'll join.' in shadows. He held out his hand.
"Do you want to join the Neverseen now?" he asked me.
I nodded and he pulled out a purple pathfinder and leaped us away. I felt the familiar tingly feeling as the light pulled us to the Neverseen and when it was over I opened my eyes. We were on a mountain covered in snow and a metal door was embedded into the mountain in front of us. The Psionipath pulled out a dagger and carefully stabbed his finger. The blood dripped down and unlike my sister (Sophie) I could stand it. The Psionipath wiped his bloody finger onto the DNA panel and the door opened revealing a long tunnel. I followed him as he took all types of twists and turns until we finally ended up at another metal door. His finger was still bloody, so he wiped his finger on another DNA panel. Did the Neverseen use blood to get everywhere? I shut down that thought and stepped into a small room. It had a dark type of marble on the floor, black walls, and a balefire chandelier hung on the top of the ceiling. Two cloaked figures sat on chairs. One chair was big and fancy, so I assumed this was their leader. The other chair was plain like the rest of the other three chairs, so the cloaked figure was below their leader.
"Finally I thought you got captured," the cloaked figure said.
"Would I ever," The Psionipath grumbled.
"Now boys, we need to make a good impression on the Shade," the leader purred.
I felt really uncomfortable, but if there was one thing I learned it's that you can't show anyone your weakness. I stood still and made sure my murky, black mask was on.
"What an interesting way to hide your face," the leader praised. I stayed silent. "Not a talker are we?"
"The Shade isn't," The Psionipath agreed.
"It's because no one is comfortable around you," the other cloaked figure told him.
Wow. They must not get along like every boy does. The leader clapped her hands and handed me a small silver ball. The ball split open and letters appeared on a tiny screen in the crack. I will change the world no matter the cost. Well I couldn't use shadows for this, so I said it for revenge on the Black Swan.
"I will change the world no matter the cost," I found myself saying.
The crack closed and another appeared. It said in red letters 'blood' with a tiny needle at the end. I took off my glove and pricked my finger. Warm gushes of blood spilled down my hand and I wiped the blood across the screen. It made a click sound and the ball closed. I handed the ball back to the leader whose hand was outstretched and she tucked it in a pocket. I put my glove back on and used my Hydrokinetic ability to make the blood sink back in my skin (I know that's even more creepy).
"We now have to do a probe on your mind,"
I stayed silent as I sat down on a chair next to the other cloaked figure. He placed his fingers on my temples and I felt his conscious dive into my mind. I counted the seconds and I was at sixty when the Telepath gasped for breath and backed away shaking his head.
"Are you purposely blocking me?"
No. I spelled in shadows.
"Then why is your blocking so strong,"
Genetic thing.
"Well your genetic thing is strong,"
"I'll look into that, but in the meantime Ruy will lead you to your room," the leader sighed.
I nodded and followed Ruy through another hall with doors lining the side. We took more complicated twisted and turns until I ended at a dark door.
"You'll be sleeping with Umber. She's our only Shade, well until you showed up,"
Thanks. I spelled in shadows.
"Your welcome. We should get you a code name,"
I thought for a moment. Miran. It means quiet in Bosnian.
"Well Miran you should get some rest,"
Good night.
"See you in the morning,"
Ruy turned around and walked away. I took a deep breath before pushing the door open to see a cloaked figure sitting on the floor surrounded with Shadowflux. This must be Umber.
"Who are you?" Umber asked.
I'm Miran.
"So you're the new Shade," Umber looked closer at me.
I stayed silent.
"Not a talker either. Seems like I'm in for a lot of thinking. Do you know how to control Shaodwflux?"
I shook my head. I had only heard about it.
"Hmm. Well tomorrow we'll practice. Meet me in the arena at noon sharp,"
After that encounter I fell asleep on the bed across from Umber and prepared myself for an exhausting day.
