"Shane," Jay is currently having another argument with me. About what? Well, Zane, me deciding I want to move out, and about us. "Can we not do this? We already went over this."
"Jason, I want to move out. I will be moving out to a dorm."
"But why?"
"We both want different living styles. Sure, we have a schedule and a system, but I don't like it and I know you don't either."
"We have it to stop this from happening."
"Well, it's happening. Ya know what this is? It's-" I pause. I can't say this, it'll hurt him. It'll hurt him because I know he's trying.
"It's what?"
"Never mind, forget it."
"It's what Shane?!"
"It's boring! It's dumb! Doing the same shit, don't you ever want to have fun and experience new things?"
"I do, but I can't."
"why?"
"because I'm still- I can't just forget everything! I can't just NOT be religious anymore, I can't just forget how I couldn't be like... Me! I can't be a delinquent after showing to the lord that I'm a homo!"
I slowly nod, lips in a thin line.
"So I'm still a "homo" I guess."
"Baby, I didn't mean that."
"I thought you were passed this. We made a rule to talk about this, we decided to say fuck it and just be us. What happened?"
"It's never stopped."
"Then you communicate with me."
"Do you hear yourself? You weren't ever dedicated to a religion, you might have had parents who did, but not you. You couldn't possibly understand, so of course, it didn't just "stop"!"
"You're right, I wasn't religious, I'm not even close to religious, but I can still be here for you if you'd just talk."
"It's not that easy."
"It might not be, but that's why you still try," He pauses for a minute as if examining me. "What's the staring for?"
"There's something... spit it out."
"I don't know what you're talking about. I just want you to talk with me more."
"Shane, say it."
"I just did."
"God damn, just fucking say it!"
"Fine! We're done!"
His face drops, and then he starts laughing. It's that wicked crazy laugh from high school. The one he would put up as an act... but this isn't an act. His fist clenches at his side, and his laughter dies down until it's just silence with him glaring. If looks could kill, I'd be 6 feet under.
"This is because of Zane, isn't it?"
"No, it's not because of him."
"Don't lie to me!"
"I'm not! It's because of this!" I point between him and me. "We want different shit in life! WE ARE ALWAYS FIGHTING! And over the DUMBEST shit! You have anger issues, and I get scared of them! You are a child! I-I was dependent on you, I needed you to provide me happiness after Zane and I split, so I used you, and I'm sorry. But, I can't love you, I can't love this, this isn't me, and it's not who I am."
"You don't mean that."
"Yes, I do! I can't do this anymore, so I'm ending it right now."
He steps forward, brings his hand back, and slaps me, "You don't mean that," he grabs my wrist pushing me against the wall. "You love me, you have always loved me," I tried to take my hands away, but he pressed harder.
"Jay, stop."
"Zanes back, so you say you don't love me anymore to be with him. You want to move out to be with him, but I can't let you do that. You're just a slut. I sacrificed so much to make you mine, and you think you can run without paying me back?"
"Jason, knock it off. I don't want to hurt you."
"You, hurt me? That's funny. Do you know what hurts, what really really hurts? You decide to leave. Is Zane making you? I'll kill him if he's making you. I'll kill him!" He removes one hand and puts it on my throat.
I start panicking, all the self-defense I've learned has flown out.
"Jason! Stop-" His other hand flies up to my mouth. I'm screaming into his hand, praying someone is going to come help. I placed a hand over the one on my mouth, trying to pry it off, but he pressed harder. He talking, but I can't hear him anymore. My other hand grabbed the one around my neck, he pressed harder there too. He's cutting off my breathing and muffling my voice.
"Stay calm," Zane's words play in my head.
He might be slowing down my breathing, but the more I struggle and resist, the more air I need. Zane never taught me how to deal with this, so I need to improvise. However, he did teach me one thing that works most of the time. I'm just hoping it works now.
I look at the bed, it holds the red hoodie Zane gave me when we started dating, my phone, and my keys are on the hook so I can make a run for it. I'm going to want to stop for air, but I need to force myself to get to the car before then. I might need to take the stairs, which is going to be a pain.
I move my leg between his, then pull up my knee hard and fast. He lets go and slips down to the floor with a curse. I kick him in the ribs so hard my foot aches in pain, then jump over his body and to the bed. I swiftly pick up the hoodie and my phone, then sprint out of the room. My throat hurts, and I'm hyperventilating, but I keep going. I swing the door open, snatching the keys then I jog out. I left my shoes, I left the door open, I just left. I went to the stairs, taking 2 at a time until I got to the main lobby.
I go to the desk, "Help," I start, catching my breath. "I need -gasp- police -pant- at apartment 201, now. Ex just -gasp- attacked me. I'm -pant- Shane Smith," I turn back around and run back to the stairs.
I jog down to the parking lot, fumbling with my keys to unlock the truck. I pray they are calling the cops, I pray he's on the floor still. I pray he won't go to my aunt to catch up with me if the cops don't get him first. I'm not going to my aunts or Zanes, I'm going home where they have a bunch of security.
I called my aunt, telling her I needed her to grab Maddy and go to Mom and Dad's. I tell her that Jay is extremely violent right now, and I don't want them in harm's way if he stops by. She agreed to meet me there. I call Gabe.
"Code green, big code green! Go lock your doors and windows, don't question just do." I hear him run around the house, doing exactly as I said. "If Jay comes by do not answer. Is the car in the garage?"
"No, what's going on?"
"Pull the car in, make it seem like you're not home in case Jay stops by."
"Fine, but what the fuck is going on?"
"I tried to break up with Jason, but he went crazy and started choking me, I'm on my way to my parents, I told the lobby to call the cops, but he knows where you live and might go to you. He's crazy right now, batshit insane. Just stay safe, don't answer him, and I'll update you more later."
"Holy shit, are you okay?"
"I don't know; call ya later," and I hang up.
I flip down the visor and see my neck red, which will turn into a bruise later. I look back over at my phone, I want to call Zane, and I look back to the road. I want him here. I want him here to help me, I want him here so I know I'm safe. I pick up my phone, and my hands already dialing.
"Shane?"
"Zane, do you remember the passcode and roads to my parent's house?"
"Umm, yeah, I do actually. Why?"
"I need you there, I will explain when I see you. I just need you there Zane," my voice cracks.
"Baby, what's wrong? What happened?"
"I need you there, please." I'm sobbing.
"I'll be there," I hear him stumbling, then jogging. "I'll be there, okay? Breathe hun, breathe. You'll be okay. Breathe, and pay attention to the roads. I'll be there."
