"We've been huddled inside for 3 weeks now, baby, and nothing has happened."
"Something will happen, something always happens," Zane shakes his head gently.
I sigh, "Get up."
He looks up at me, turning his body to lay on his back.
"I'm not leaving. I will never leave this place if it means you are safe."
I reach forward and grab his hand, I use all my body weight to pull him into a sitting position.
"You are a stubborn piece of shit, and I love you. You haven't shaved in a week because this irrational fear consumes you. You are refusing to eat, sleep, or drink. What do you think you're doing?"
"I don't know. I can't sleep without images of you getting hurt, I can eat without feeling like I'm going to vomit because of my anxiety... I don't know Shane," he looks up to me.
"Call Black," I cross my arms.
"Black?"
"Yes," I turn around to the bedside table I pick up his phone and open his contacts. I press on Dr.Black. "Schedule an appointment, now."
He signs and grabs the phone, pressed call, and I sit with him as he calls. "Hey Black," Zane says then puts the phone on speaker.
"Zane, what a surprise, I haven't heard from you in a while."
"Well, Shane's forcing me to make an appointment. He's actually with me right now."
"Oh? I have some free time now, about 20 minutes. Let's schedule for later and let me get the gist of how you've been doing."
—
"I'm glad to hear you are getting married, invite me along, will you?"
"Of course, you have an invite, Dr.Black," I grin and grab Zane's arm. "Zane, take it over."
"My past is coming back... it's made me anxious. I can't leave the damn apartment. I keep having nightmares about my past affecting Shane..."
"In summary, Zane's anxiety hasn't let us leave the house in 3 weeks. So, I'm making the best decision for him and forcing him to make an appointment."
"Yes, that is the best decision. Zane, I can't give you much help because I don't know what triggered your past, but I do want to see what's going on. What are you seeing in these dreams?"
"My past, my past comes back to me and hurts Shane."
"When you say your past, do you mean your uncle?"
"No, when I was in the city. When I worked the city and got into fights and hurt people."
"Did something trigger this episode?"
"I saw... him. A guy I hurt, that hurt me back, but I hurt him worse. I saw him again, the look on his face told me everything. He's going to come for me, and he's going to hurt Shane. I can feel it," Zane grabs tightly onto Shane's hand.
"Let's work through this slowly. As of right now, no one is in any danger. You are safe at home, so take a second to breathe and think this through. You are safe, you are at home where you can be at peace. Home is your haven, it is okay to relax and let your mind recover. I don't have much time, but I want you to start walking around your home slowly. Ground yourself and remind yourself you are in a safe place when you are home. That's what I want you to do, okay? Shane, you should do this with him, it will help both of you."
"I'll make sure of it," I rub my thumb against the top of Zane's hand.
"Good. And, Zane. I will be calling you back when this appointment is done, I want you to tell me how grounding yourself at home feels. Then we can talk a little more about your anxiety."
"Thank you, Black, I'll pay you extra for this," Zane sighs.
"No need for that. This is free of charge, this is just me helping a friend while I'm finishing up a break."
"Thank you, Dr. Black. We'll let you go now, thank you again," I lean against Zane as I speak.
"Of course, I will talk to you both soon."
Black hung up first, then Zane sighed and looked at me in desperation. I lean over and kiss his cheek.
"You can do this, we can do this together," I stand and grab his arm. "First, let's get you shaved so I can properly kiss you."
He gives up, a small smile fighting its way through his anxiety, and he stands with me. I led him into the bathroom and sat on the counter while he washed his face and shaved. I knew there wasn't much I could do to help his anxiety but I knew that telling him I loved him and I was there would help enough. I could also force him to make himself feel better. I now know all sides of him. I know how to match his triggers with a happier energy, I know how to match his anxiety with something calming.
—
A week later I finally got him out of the house, and now he's at his therapy appointment. I'm waiting in the office. It took him a lot of effort to get out of the apartment, but I was about to get him out. It was a battle, just like it's been a battle to get him to shave so I can properly kiss him. But I always manage. After all, with how he's helped me so much these past years, it's only right I help him when he needs me the most. He doesn't want to tell his family why we're been hiding away, we've just said we've been busy with school. I tell my parents the same thing to keep the story straight. My parents keep telling us to hurry up with school and get jobs so we can have a family. They want grandkids, even when we say we are too young right now. Though, I agree. I'm fully ready to be done with school, get married, adopt, and have a family. I'm ready to tie the knot and be Shane Williams.
The door opens and out comes Zane. I stand and step forward, I peck his lips and bring my arms around his neck.
"Feel better?"
He smiles and leans down to kiss me.
"I do, you're always right."
"I know I am. Let's go home. I forced you out for a little bit, and I will be every day until you realize there is no threat."
Zane grinned and pecked my lips.
"What would I do without you?"
"Probably not be alive right now. There's no way anyone would've stopped to pick up your lazy ass on the road that day," I grinned, running my hand through his hair. I'm so damn happy he's growing it back out. It's back down to the base of his neck.
"Ouch, that's a fresh wound baby," Zane grins back.
My hand slid from his neck to his side, and I pinched the scar hiding under his shirt. "Really? That seems healed to me."
He laughed and squirmed away. I realized long ago he was ticklish on his sides. It's the only place he's ticklish, meaning that's the area I always attack. He grabs my arms and pulls them up high.
"That's cheating, you tall-ass," I laugh, he leans down to my ear.
He let go of my hands. "Let's go home my little emo."
I jump onto his back, his hands grab my thighs as he holds me up. "You're evil," I bit his ear, he chuckled.
"I'm also hot. Which do you like more?"
I held on tight, I'll forever hold on to him as tight as possible.
"Both, my bad boy."
