I wake up suddenly in the middle of the night, shaking and crying. I quickly cover my mouth to try and quieten myself. It was too late, Jake rushes in and puts the light on, revealing a look of panic. "Hey, what's wrong?" His expression softens as he sits next to me on the bed.
I shake my head as I turn onto my side to face him. "Nothing, just a nightmare. I'm fine."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
I stay silent for a moment then sigh. "Now that I've remembered the accident, I just keep seeing it." Tears start to well up in my eyes. "Maybe I'd have been better off forgetting it."
Jake gently wraps an arm around me. "It'll get better, I promise. I'm sure you'll feel better when you get some of your other memories back."
I nod slowly. "Yeah, I guess you're right."
"I'll leave you to get some rest then." Jake turns to get up.
I grab his hand to stop him. "Stay."
He turns to look at me in surprise. "Are you sure that's a good idea?"
"Why not?" I frown.
"Well, if you're sure."
He settles down next to me and I rest my head on his chest. The next time I wake up, I've snuggled up against Jake and he's playing with my hair. I close my eyes again to savour the moment. Jake nudges me. "I know you're awake."
"I'm definitely not." I murmur as I nudge my head into the crook of Jake's neck.
"Hmm." He chuckles as he continues to play with my hair.
I glance over at the clock, it's only early morning so I doze off to sleep again.I wake up alone this time but to the smell of cooking. I pad into the kitchen and smile at the sight of Jake cooking. "What're you cooking?"
He spins around and looks at me in surprise. "Pancakes. I didn't think you'd be up yet."
Nodding, I set the table and sit down, I love pancakes.Jake and I don't speak much during breakfast but it's a comfortable silence. After he leaves to go to work, I make myself useful by washing up and doing some cleaning around the house. Now that I've remembered the accident, I can't stop thinking about it. I've become jumpy at regular sounds such as someone knocking at the door and even the phone ringing. I desperately wanted to go back to work but I now realise I wouldn't be much use there.
When Jake returns from work, he has a huge grin on his face. I look at his quizzically. "Why are you so smiley?"
"Well, I spoke to Captain Holt, he says you can return to work tomorrow."
All the colour drains from my face as I shake my head. "I- I can't come back now."
He frowns. "What? Why not? I thought you desperately wanted to come back!"
"I did... But now I remember the accident and everything has changed really. Sometimes I jump at the slightest noise. I wouldn't be any use at work."
"Not even doing office work? You love doing the paperwork."
I sigh and look down at my hands. "I'll think about it."
He nods and changes the subject. "Will you ready to go out soon?"
"Sure."I quickly retreat into the bedroom feeling that I had let Jake down. He looked so excited for me to return to work and looked so disappointed when I admitted I didn't want to anymore. Pushing the negative thoughts away, I open the wardrobe to pick out an outfit, then quickly get changed and go back into the living room.
Jake looks up from his phone as soon as I enter and grins at me. "You're so beautiful, you know."
I blush and look at the floor. "Thank you..."
He disappears into the bedroom and changes quickly. "Ready to go?"
"Yes." I nod.
He takes my hand and leads me out of our apartment. "It's only a short walk away." He smiles.
"Good, I don't think I could walk too far in these heels." I laugh.
He shakes his head. "Why do you wear them if they aren't comfortable?"
"Because they look nice, and I like them."When we are sat at our table, I look around the restaurant. "This place seems familiar..."
He smiles at me knowingly.
"You aren't going to tell me why, are you?"
"No, I thought we'd see if you could remember."
The waitress smiles when she comes over. "Y/N, Jake. Nice to see you both again. I hear your wedding didn't go as smoothly as you'd hoped."
I look at Jake in confusion. "It didn't? What happened?"
The waitress looks at me in shock. "Y/N? What do you mean? You were at your own wedding... Weren't you?"
I laugh lightly. "Sorry, you must not have heard... I was in an accident and lost all my memories from when I was promoted."
If she looked shocked before, she looks even more shocked now. "I'm really sorry to hear that."After our meal, I grin at Jake. "I'm thinking that maybe we should be going to Shaw's next..."
He looks at me suspiciously. "Oh yeah? And why do you think that?"
"Welllll... It seems to be tradition. You know, after our first date and your proposal..."
"You remembered?!"
I smile and nod vigorously.
"Oh Y/N! That's great!" He tightly wraps his arms around me and lifts me up, almost squeezing the life out of me.
I laugh as he puts me down. "You don't need to squeeze so hard! I'm not going anywhere!"
"I know, I'm just so happy that you remembered some more!"
"I'm happy too." I smile. After that, we had a few drinks at Shaw's, and I think you can imagine what happened when we went home...
A/N: I'm really sorry it's been so long since I updated. I've been lost in books honestly XD
All that said, I think I'll be ending this book fairly soon...
Have any of you read the Pegasus series by Kate O'Hearn? I was thinking of writing my next book based on those as they're honestly my favourite books ever, been reading them for years. I just love Roman Mythology! Would any of you be interested in reading something like that?
