After lunch ended, Hermione raced out of the lunchroom to find Draco. She had to find Draco. She wasn't going to let some stupid Slytherin-Gryffindor rivalry get in her way. She looked down the hallway leading out of the Great Hall and saw striking blonde hair walking towards the Slytherin common room. She ran, shoving a few Slytherins out of the way. She didn't shove them roughly, but she still got upset reactions like 'Watch it, Gryffindor,' and 'Who does she think she is?'. Hermione waited until Draco turned the corner. When he did, she grabbed his hand and ran with him into the broom closet and shut the door.
"Hermione? What's going on? Did you get my letter? Why are we in a broom closet?" Draco whispered.
"Yes, I did," Hermione whispered. "You're not a stupid Malfoy, Draco. You're wonderful. You're absolutely wonderful."
"Thank you, Hermione. That means so much coming from you," Draco paused. "But we can't be friends."
"But-"
"Hermione, no. We can't. If my father finds out, he'll kill me."
"He would never kill you, you're his son."
"I wouldn't put it past him."
"We can still be friends, Draco."
"We can be friends in secret!" Draco's eyes lit up. "We can write each other letters," Draco suggested.
Hermione wasn't super fond of this idea, considering they could easily talk to each other, as they lived and went to school in the same building. But instead of arguing, she said, "Perfect."
"Thank you, Hermione."
"For what?"
"No one's ever been as nice to me as you've been."
"Draco, you're my only friend."
"What do you mean? Aren't you friends with Potter?"
"A little, but not that much. Most of the time he's around Ronald, and I can't stand Ronald."
"You and me both, Hermione. That's the kid that had the audacity to laugh at my name."
"He called me mental," Hermione grimaced.
"I don't think you're mental. You're insanely smart, not mental."
"Thanks, Draco," she laughed.
"Do you think we can get out of this broom closet now? It reeks of mold."
"Yes, definitely."
"You go first, I'll follow after you."
"Good idea." Draco hid behind the door when Hermione exited the broom closet.
Hermione had flying lessons next so she walked out to the courtyard. Draco came soon after her. Hermione blushed when she saw him again.
"Good afternoon, class," a woman with spiky blue-gray hair and yellow eyes said.
"Good afternoon, Madam Hooch," the class chorused.
"Welcome to your first flying lesson. Well, what are you waiting for? Everyone step up to the left side of your broomsticks. Come on now, hurry up. Stick your right hand over the broom and say, 'Up!'" Madame Hooch instructed. Everyone in the class placed their hands over their brooms.
"Up!" everyone called. Harry's broom flew into his hand immediately.
"Whoa," Harry breathed.
"How did you do that?" Hermione asked in awe.
"Up!" Draco said so that Hermione would hear. He was jealous that Hermione was impressed with Harry and not him. Draco's broom flew into his hand. He grinned at Hermione and Hermione flashed a small smile back.
