Ch.23: The Creature and The Criminal

"Lumos" casted the boys

The three followed a dark narrow path staying close togther

"Where do you think this lead?" Hermione asked looking around

"I have a hunch but I hope I'm wrong" Y/n said turning his head to answer

The path ends and they emerge in a bottom floor of the Shrieking Shack. They slowly walk up the stairs and open a door to see Ron sitting with a wounded leg with his rat in hand

"Ron!" Harry ran over to the boy. "You're ok"

"The dog... Ron where is the dog?" Y/n asked

"Its a trap Y/n!" Ron said pointing to a man with shoulder length curly black hair standing behind the door. "He's the dog. He's an Animagus"

"If you want to kill Harry then you'll have to get through us" Y/n defended as he and Harry drew their wands

"No. Only one will die tonight" the man said with a low yet calming voice

"And it will be you!" Harry shouted pushing past Y/n and tackles the man down

"Going to kill me Harry?" He asks smiling

"Yes" Harry threatened aiming his wand to the man's throat

Suddenly the door swings opens and Lupin reveals himself stepping in

"Professor Lupin!?" The four students exclaimed in confusion. Harry stands up and joins the others

"Looking a bit ragged, aren't we, Sirius?" Lupin smiles helping then Sirius up. "Finally the skin reflects the madness within"

"You'd know all about the madness within, wouldn't you, Remus?" Sirius retorted as the two embrace

"No!" Hermione shouted taking a step forward. "I trusted you! I covered up for you. And all this time you've been his friend!" She turns to the boys. "He's a werewolf! That's why he's been missing classes!"

"How long have you known?" Lupin asked impressed by Hermione's knowledge

"Since Professor Snape set the essay"

"You're the brightest witch of your age I've ever met, Hermione"

"Yes, you glow like the sun. And you howl at the moon. Enough talk! He dies. Now. If you won't do it with me, Remus, I'll do it alone" Sirius says losing his patience

"Wait Sirius-"

"I did my waiting! Twelve years of it! In Azkaban! Trust me, you wouldn't have lasted a week!"

"All right then" Lupin nods begins to hand Sirius his wand. "As you wish"

"No!" Harry shouts aims his wand but is disarmed by Lupin. "You betrayed my parents! You sold them to Voldemort!"

"It's a lie! I never would've betrayed James and Lily!"

"No Harry you have to listen" Lupin said tryin to calm down Harry only to fail

"Did he listen! When my mother was dying! Did he hear her screaming!" Harry shouted in anger

"No! I wasn't there! And I'll regret it the rest of my life" Sirius said with a look of regret and pain in his eyes

"Someone else betrayed your parents, Harry" Lupin said looking around the room. "Someone in this room right now. Someone who, until quite recently, I believed to be dead"

"He's as good as dead" Sirius added

"What are you two talking about? No one's here but us" Y/n said getting the attention of the two adults
